Mrs. Mary Cunningham Smith, wife of Henry Smith of Farmington Route Two, died on Wednesday, December 2, 1942, at Mount St. Rose Hospital, St. Louis County, where she had been a patient for two years. She was 36 years of age.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, December 4th at Marvin Chapel, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Larry Jones assisted by Rev. Wesley Thomas. Burial will be in Marvin Chapel Cemetery. Boyer Service.

Henry L. Byington of Farmington, son of the late John and Suzanne Byington was born in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri in June, 1859, and departed this life at the home of his sister, Mrs. T. T. Armon of Bonne Terre, whom he was visiting. His death occurred suddenly shortly after noon on Sunday, December 6, 1942. He was 83 years 4 months of age.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Cozean Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. E. C. Abernathy, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Flat River. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetry.
In 1880 he was united in marriage to Artie Missie Harris, and to this union were born seven children: George E. and Marvin L. Byington of Farmington; Della (Mrs. Lawrence) Cunningham of Hollywood, Calif.; Alyne (Mrs. C.) Smith of Los Angeles, Calif.; Lee and Paul L. Byington of St. Louis, and Myrtle, who died in infancy. His wife preceded him in death 16 years.
Mr. Byington was converted when a young man and became a member of the Baptist church in Flat River, where he remained faithful until the end.

MRS. H. L. BYINGTON:
Mrs. H. L. Byington died at St. John's Hospital in St. Louis Monday, April 26, 1926, at ten-twenty P.M., age sixty-one years, eleven months and six days. Mrs. Byington had been sick since last September and, on April 18, she was taken to St. Louis, where she underwent a serious surgical operation from which she never fully rallied.
Artie M. Harris, daughter of Job C. and Mary Jane Harris, was born in Ste. Genevieve County May 20, 1864. She was converted at the age of fifteen years and united with the Three Rivers Baptist Church and remained a member there until moving to Flat River, where she joined the Flat River Baptist Church.
She was united in marriage to H. L. Byington December 23, 1880. To this union, seven children were born, George of Desloge, Marvin of Three Rivers, Della (Mrs. Lawrence Cunningham) of Los Angeles, Calif., R. Lee of Flat River, Alyne (Mrs. C. B. Smith) of St. Louis, Paul of St. Louis and Myrtle, who died in infancy. Besides these children and her husband, she leaves one sister, Mrs. Anne Edwards of St. Louis, and one brother, Bud Harris of Salem, to mourn her death.
The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. E. D. Owen, at the Baptist church in Flat River Thursday, April 29, 1926, at two o'clock. Interment was made at the Masonic Cemetery in Farmington.
Mrs. Byington had lived practically all her life in this county where she had many friends. She was a good neighbor, a loving mother and a faithful Christian. Although she suffered much, she bore it with patience. Truly it can be said she was a good woman. The News extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

The body was removed to the Cozean Funeral Home but plans for the services had not been made yesterday afternoon.

John Thomas Ringer, son of the late Joab and Sarah Eaton Ringer was born in Bonne Terre, Missouri, March 2, 1876 and died at his home in Bonne Terre on March 20, 1943 at the age of 67 years 18 days. He had been ill for the past eight months of heart trouble.
On June 2, 1904 he was united in marriage to Josie Mitchell of Bonne Terre. To this union three children were born; one daughter Ada (Mrs. Eli) White and two sons, Willard Luther and Fred Ringer all of Bonne Terre. He also leaves one son-in-law, one daughter-in-law of Bonne Terre, three grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Boyer of Leadwood and Mrs. Mary Forrester of Witchita, Kansas and three brothers, Dan and Fred Ringer of Cape Girardeau and Charles Ringer of Illinois, also a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harvey, James and Louis.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Church of God in Bonne Terre conducted by Rev. C. W. Conn of Illinois, assisted by the pastor, Rev. T. L. Forrester. Burial was made in Germania Cemetery under the direction of Caldwell Service.

Melvin Luther McHenry, son of the late Samuel and Sarah McHenry, was born near Desloge, Missouri, on December 24, 1878, and passed away at his home in Cantwell, Missouri on Sunday, April 11, 1943, aged 64 years 3 months 17 days.
On October 12, 1902, he was united in marriage to Latty Evens and to this union were born four children, two of whom, Gussie and Jessie, died in infancy. He is survived by his widow and two children, Mrs. Mary Mueller and Walter McHenry of Desloge; also two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Berkley and Mrs. Mary Murrill of Desloge and three grandchildren, Maxine and Patsy Mueller and Melba Fay McHenry.
Mr. McHenry had been a member of the Russell Chapel Methodist Church many years. He was a good man, a loyal citizen and a devoted husband and father, highly respected by everyone who knew him. His passing is mourned by a wide circle of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Russell Chapel Church Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by Rev. C. W. Griffin, assisted by Rev. P. R. Watts. Interment was in the McHenry Family Cemetery. Boyer Service.

Sarah Boen Cooksey, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Boen, was born in Iron County, Mo., near Belleview, on July 9, 1863, and departed this life in Leadwood, December 12, 1942, at the age of 79 years 5 months 3 days. She was united in marriage to John Cooksey in July 1887, who preceded her in death just 13 months ago. While there were no children of their own they made a home for Mrs. D. M. Smith, at whose home she died, taking her when she was very young and Leo Willis now of St. Louis.
She was converted about 30 years ago and united with the Baptist Church of Leadwood where she remained a member until death. She was a good woman, as one will hear from the lips of all of her neighbors. She had been in failing health since the death of her husband and has been confined to her bed most of the time, but she bore it without complaint. Now that she has gone to be with Jesus she shall have that glorious rest. She leaves to mourn their loss, two sisters, Mrs. George Forshee of near Leadwood and Mrs. David Tucker of Irondale; one brother, Valentine Boen of Leadwood and the two foster children, Mrs. D. M. Smith of Leadwood and Leo Willis of St. Louis and their nine children to whom she was "Grandma".
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Church of God in Leadwood by Rev. W. C. Polson assisted by Rev. Claude Carl. Interment in the Adams Cemetery.

BODY OF PVT. LOUIS E. HOUSE RE-BURIED AT GERMANIA:
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Clifford Wigger at the Providence Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock for Pvt. Louis E. House, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis E. House of Bonne Terre Route Two, who was killed in the battle of Saipan on July 10, 1944. Re-interment was in the Germania Cemetery with Benham Service.
Pvt. House was born July 20, 1923 and died at the age of 21. He had served one and one-half years in the U.S. Infantry.
Besides his parents, he leaves the following brothers and sisters: Roy, James Henry, Ethel (Mrs. Elmer) Cross, Violet (Mrs. James) Skaggs and Marilyn (Mrs. Charles) Miller of Bonne Terre, Marvin, in service, and Evelyn, Merle, Irvin and Cecil at home. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

James Alexander Qualls, son of the late Marion and Martelia Qualls, was born at Eminence, Reynolds County, Missouri on January 9, 1869, and departed this life at his home in Farmington, Monday, December 7, 1942, at 2 a.m., ending an illness of six years. He was 73 years 10 months 29 days of age.
On May 18, 1890, he was united in marriage to Mary S. Raby, and they were the parents of two children: Frank Qualls of St. Louis, and Bessie, who died in childhood. Besides his wife and son his passing is mourned by two brothers, Lee and George Qualls of Desloge, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Qualls had enjoyed life together for 52 years and on May 18, 1940, celebrated their Golden Wedding. Most of their married life has been spent in Missouri and they have been residents of Farmington since 1932. He was employed by St. Joseph Lead Company for 32 years. He united with the Baptist Church in Farmington in 1936 and remained a faithful member until his death.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon conducted by the pastor, Rev. W. P. Young. Interment was in Parkview. Cozean Funeral Service.

W. M. Zimmerman passed away at his home in Doe Run, Missouri on Wednesday, October 28, 1942, after a prolonged illness. He was 80 years of age.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Emma Brown Zimmerman and eight children: Henry Zimmerman of Flat River; Mabel (Mrs. William) Foley and Bessie (Mrs. Ray) Dunahay of St. Louis; Carrie (Mrs. Alonzo) Whitmeyer of North Carolina; George Zimmerman of Bonne Terre; Mary Ellen, William and Fred, at home. A daughter, Louise, preceded him in death.
He also leaves a brother, Edward Zimmerman of Pittsburgh, Kansas, and four grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at two o'clock, Friday afternoon, October 30th, at the Sparks Funeral Home in Elvins.

One of the most widely known and best loved citizens of Flat River, Nathan Avery Zimmerman, familiarly called "Uncle Fud" by his many friends, died Sunday, July 3rd (1921) at his home in St. Francois. He had not been quite well as usual, for two or three weeks, but his condition was not considered serious since he was seen daily, at work about his store and hotel, which he has maintained in St. Francois for a number of years. About the middle of the afternoon on Sunday, he was suddenly stricken with paralysis, and remained unconscious until the time of his death, in the early part of the night. He was 66 years, 7 months and 20 days old.
N. A. Zimmerman was born in Bollinger County in this state, November 13, 1854. He was converted at the age of sixteen in the Old Prospect Methodist church at Glen Allen. He lived an exemplary life and was a member of the Fredericktown and Bonne Terre Methodist Churches. He was a member of the local Methodist Church at the time of his death.
He was united in marriage, October 11, 1877, to Miss Mary M. Tucker. To this union six children were born, all of whom preceeded him in death. He is survived by his wife, who is lovingly known to her many friends as "Aunt Pink". He also has four brothers and one sister, all of whom were present at the graveside.
Mr. Zimmerman was a Scottish Rites Mason, having been one among the first men in this county to attain that distinction. His burial was conducted under the auspices of the local Masonic Lodge. A number of Flat River and Desloge Masons accompanied the funeral to Glen Allen.
The funeral service was held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, at the local Methodist Church, by the pastor, Rev. Wm. Stewart, who paid glowing tribute to the life of the good man who had just passed over. The remains were taken to the old home at Glen Allen for interment.

Everett L. Funk, 99, of Farmington, died Nov. 14, 2000, at Manorcare Nursing Facility, Champaign, IL. He was born on March 5, 1902, on the family farm outside of Annapolis, the son of Edward and Emma Cellison Funk. On May 3, 1925, he married Hazel Marie Nelson, she died on May 6, 1995, shortly after their 70th wedding anniversary.
Mr. Funk attended college at Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau. He was a rural school teacher and businessman at Annapolis. At the beginning of World War II he went to work as a railroad conductor for the Pullman Company and continued until his retirement in 1965.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Farmington, Eagle Lake Country Club and the Association of Retired Railroad Employees.
His hobbies were golf (he played until age 97), gardening, games, and woodworking. He helped with the renovation of his boyhood homeplace where he enjoyed spending time after his retirement. He was pleased that his childhood home was designated a Centennial Farm in 1990.
Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at the Bryson Funeral Home, Pilot Knob. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Bryson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Mann Cemetery, Annapolis. Memorials may be made to the Mann Cemetery Association, Route 77, P.O. Box 178B, Annapolis, MO 63620 or The First Baptist Church, Farmington, MO 63640.

William James Beck, 79, of Jefferson City, died Oct. 31, 2000, at St. Mary's Health Center. He was born Aug. 2, 1921, in Fredericktown, son of Henry Otto and Dewey Mae Heitman Beck. He was preceded in death by a son, James Lynn Beck in 1962. He was married March 8, 1947, in Farmington [St. Francois County, Mo.], to Olga Lucille "Jess" Jesperson, who survives at the home.
He was a graduate of Flat River High School. He served in the Medical Corp in the United States Army from 1942-1946 in the South Pacific and Japan, where he received the rank of sergeant. He went on to graduate from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau with a BS in chemistry and then worked in Springfield, MO at the O'Reilly T.B. Hospital. He received his masters in bacteriology from the University of Missouri-Columbia after which he became director of the laboratory for the Missouri Health Department in Jefferson City. He then moved to Gig Harbor, Washington where he became director of the Marine Science Laboratory. He then graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI with a Ph.D. in epidemiology. After receiving his Ph.D., he worked for one year for the District of Columbia Health Department. From there, he joined the United States Public Health Service of the Surgeon General's Office. He was the director of the Artic Health Research Center in Fairbanks, AK. He was then promoted to the North Eastern Federal Public Health Regional Office in Boston, MA. He then moved to the Western Federal Public Regional Office in San Franciso, CA where he retired in 1982 at the rank of captain. He returned to Jefferson City in 1982, where he was deputy director of the Missouri Department of Health for two years.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he was a life-time deacon and served on numerous committees. He received the Meritorious Service Award from the United States Army. He was a past state officer of Lion's International; past state president of T.R.O.A. and served as an ombudsman at Heisinger Retirement Center. He was a drummer for Glen Gonder's Volunteer Band, which plays for the elderly at nursing homes. He was a life member of the American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5.
He is also survived by two sons, Michael W. Beck of Lake Nehai and Ronald G. Beck of Jefferson City; one brother, John Henry Beck of St. Louis; two granddaughters, Rebecca J. Beck-Soto of Kansas City, MO and Katherine A. Beck of Springfield, MO.
Visitation, Thursday, 4-7 p.m., Houser-Millard Funeral Directors, 2613 W. Main St. in Jefferson City. Funeral services, Friday, 1 p.m., at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors Chapel, Rev. Lawrence W. Veatch officiating. Friends will also be received from 1:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the Hillview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Farmington. Graveside services with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hillview Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorials: National Kidney Foundation or the American Heart Association.

William G. "Bill" Hickman, 66, of Jefferson City, died Oct. 28, 2000, at his home. He was born Nov. 22, 1933, in Bonne Terre [St. Francois County], son of the late Milton and Wilma Birdie Sanders Hickman. Also preceded by two brothers, Donald Hickman and Milton Hickman. He was married on April 2, 1955, at Bonne Terre, to Mildred Jean Young who survives at the home.
Other survivors include: one son, William Scott Hickman of Jefferson City; two daughters, Cheryl Jean Fisher of Columbia, MO and Janet Lynn Wright of Anabel, MO; two brothers, James Darrell Hickman of Bonne Terre and Charles Curtis Hickman of Desloge; one sister, Dorothy Jane Hickman Graf of Park Hills; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Freeman Mortuary in Jefferson City. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Freeman Chapel. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum of Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to The Hospice of Jefferson City and Mid-Missouri or the American Cancer Society.

Verna May Barbey Parke, 89, of Orange, VA, died Oct. 24, 2000, at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, VA. She was the daughter of the late Eugene L. Barbey and Izie Lester Barbey. Her husband was the late Ernest Morton Dudley Parke. Preceded in death by a half-brother, Earl Barbey; brother, Ernest Barbey; and sisters, Aline Reed and Beatrice Pinkston.
Verna was a member of the Orange Baptist Church where she was in the Fidelis Sunday School Class and the Happy Agers. She was a graduate of Desloge High School, Desloge [St. Francois County, Mo].
She is survived by one daughter, Joan Elizabeth Parke Woolfolk and husband, Thomas L. of Orange, VA; two sons, Jerome Lester Parke and wife, Shirley of St. Louis and Ernest Eugene Parke and wife, Maria of Catawissa; grandchildren: Lisa Parke Nichols; Teresa Parke Poole and husband, Tom; Michelle Parke Herrick and husband, Bryan; John Neil Parke and wife, Donna; Melissa Parke Rolfe and husband, Steve; Thomas Morton Woolfolk and wife, Flora; William David Woolfolk and wife, Deborah; Mary Elizabeth Woolfolk and husband, James Thomas and Jerome Parke Woolfolk; great-grandchildren: Christopher K. Hilma "Bobbie" Yoder, 83, of Bonne Terre [St. Francois County], died Oct. 24, 2000, at National Health Care. She was born Feb. 6, 1917, in Centerville to the late Roy and Susan Laxton Baker. She was preceded in death by husband, Darwin "Pete" Yoder, daughter, Jeanne Johnson, brother, Ralph Baker.
She is survived by son, Elmer Black; San Antonio, Texas; two step-sons: Darwin Lee Yoder, Arnold, Edwin Earl Yoder, Bonne Terre; sister, Billie Bauer (Bob), Lake Timberline; 18 grandchildren.

Lyle F. Womble, 77, of Park Hills, Mo. died Oct. 13, 2000 at Mineral Area Regional Medical Center in Farmington. Mr. Womble was born April 10, 1923 in Bellview, Mo. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Desloge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Franklin and Susan (Fahland) Womble, and his wife, E. Maxine (Branon) Womble.
He is survived by two daughters, Lyla and Debbie; three stepchildren, Lynda (Mrs. Bill Priest) of Park Hills, Mo., Terry Johnson of Arizona, and Don Johnson and wife Julia of Salem, Mo.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at C.Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Home in Desloge. Services are Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at C.Z. Boyer & Son Chapel in Desloge with Rev. Don Robbins officiating. Interment will be at Chestnut Ridge Cemetery, Ste. Genevieve County.

DESLOGE - Irene G. Quayle, 86, died October 11, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center in Rock Island, Il. She was born in Desloge [St. Francois County], Mo., January 11, 1914 to Norman and Ellen (Ackerson) Jenkerson.
She was married on June 1, 1950 to Donald Quayle. She worked as a waitress and belonged to Pythian Sisters Blackhawk Temple. Her hobbies included sewing for her family and canning.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Eunice Edwards, and one brother, Hershel Q. Jenkerson. She is survived by her husband, Donald, her daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Rev. Theodore Janke, Lewiston, Pa., and one brother, Arthur "Red" Jenkerson, Farmington, Mo.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Knox-Larson Funeral Home in Rock Island. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 18, 2000, also at Knox-Larson Funeral Home. Interment will be at Greenview Cemetery. Memorials: Gideon's International.
