PAULINE SCHMIDT DIED FRIDAY IN BONNE TERRE:
Pauline Schmidt of Bonne Terre died in the hospital there last Friday after a short illness and the infirmities of age. The body was prepared for burial by Benham Undertaking Service and shipped to Philadelphia in care of nephews who took charge there.
Pauline, as she was known, came to Bonne Terre about forty years ago. She was a Russian-Jew and engaged in the junk business in Bonne Terre for several years before going into the coal business.
Little if anything was known about her family connections or her financial affairs until her death.
She lived alone and only one time in her long years as a resident of Bonne Terre was there any attempt upon the part of anyone to molest her. That was several years ago when it was reported that she had been robbed of a considerable amount of money.
When Pauline Schmidt came to Bonne Terre she wore felt boots, long skirts and heavy clothing. She attended to her own business and was content with others doing the same. In so doing she built up a good sized fortune, which is reported to be in bonds, cash and property. She came to Bonne Terre apparently as a pauper and through privation accumulated much of the worldly goods, evidently for a purpose known only to herself.

ROBERT ARNETT, 22, FATALLY INJURED AT NO. 3 ST. JOE CO. SHAFT
Robert H. Arnett, 22 years old, who has been in the employ of the St. Joseph Lead Company, was fatally injured Monday afternoon just after 3 o'clock, under ground at Number Three. He had just completed his shift, and had started up to get his card. For some reason he did not hear the approaching underground locomotive, and was knocked down, several of the cars having passed over his body.
He lived for a short time, and was being rushed to the Bonne Terre Hospital, but died on the way there. The remains were brought back to the Diemer Undertaking rooms at Elvins, where Coroner Prather held an inquest Tuesday morning. It was found that he had died as the result of internal injuries, no bones having been broken.
The unfortunate man had been boarding at Rivermines. His home was at Fredericktown. His father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Arnett, came to Elvins Monday night, having driven through in a car. They made arrangements for the removal of the remains to Fredericktown Wednesday morning.

IRVIN TOMLINSON RUN OVER BY PASSENGER TRAIN LAST MONDAY:
Got Confused at Signals of the Engineer and Stepped Directly in Front of Engine. Right Arm So Badly Mangled and Crushed, Amputation Was Necessary.
Irvin Tomlinson, 19 years old, whose home is at Rivermines, was painfully injured Monday morning, shortly before 11 o'clock, when the St. Louis passenger train, over the M.R. & B.T. line, ran over him at a point about half way between St. Joe shaft, Number three and the Elvins depot.
His version of how the accident happened was this: he was walking along the right-of-way, on his way to Elvins. He heard the train approaching, and stepped over to one side, at the same time walking along. The engineer kept signaling him to get farther away and he got confused and stepped directly in the track of the approaching engine. The engine was so near that there was no time to stop. The unfortunate man was knocked from the track but fell in such a way that his arms were across the track. The right arm was so badly mangled that it had to be amputated near the shoulder. The left wrist was broken. There were some bruises and scratches about the face.
Dr. E. E. Whiteside of Elvins gave the unfortunate man first aid. He was then rushed to the National Hospital where Dr. G. B. Williams, of Flat River operated on him. We are told that he is doing nicely.

AGED EMPLOYEE OF NATIONAL FALLS IN SHAFT: Fell 200 Feet. Was Employed Regularly On Cage. Jury Fails To Learn Cause of Accident.
Chas. B. Valle, aged 69 years, was instantly killed Monday night when he fell about 200 feet down No. 1, St. Louis Smelting & Refining Co. shaft. There were no witnesses to the accident, and its exact cause will probably never be known.
Mr. Valle was employed in the shaft, his duties being to ride the shaft cage whenever it was called to the different levels of the mine. Just a few minutes before he met his death he had gone down to one of the levels with a number of men who were going on shift. After letting them off the cage he went back up. The men had only gone a short distance from the shaft when they heard a noise in the shaft. On investigation they found Mr. Valle's body.
An inquest was conducted by Coroner Prather. The verdict of the jury was to the effect that death was due to falling down shaft, the cause of fall unknown.
A short funeral service was conducted at the Valle home in Desloge, Wednesday morning at 9:30, after which the remains were taken to the Eidson cemetery in Belleview Valley where interment was made. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. J. L. Eaves, Mrs. Guy Cummings and Miss Ettress, all of Desloge, and one son, James.
Additional information: His daughters' (Lee Ettress Valle) bible has his birthplace as Bellview Valley, Missouri.

ALEX H. MILNE KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT FRIDAY--Former St. Francois County Resident Meets Death When Car Struck Bridge on U.S. Highway 62
Alex H. Milne of Gideon, Mo., a former resident of St. Francois County, was killed early Friday morning when the car in which he was riding alone, struck a bridge on U.S. Highway 62, about one half mile from Risco, in New Madrid County. He was thrown from the car and killed instantly. Mr. Milne had spent Thursday evening at Portageville, where he attended a Democratic Committee meeting, and a severe rain storm delayed him in starting home. When discovered by a passing motorist, his body was lying clear of the wrecked car, and his watch had stopped at 3:45.
Mrs. Milne, who with her small daughter, Frances, was visiting her sister, Mrs. M. L. Grady, in Farmington, was notified of the tragedy, and left immediately for Gideon.
A funeral service was held at Gideon Saturday afternoon, after which the body was removed to the old Milne homestead at Syenite, and kept there until Sunday afternoon, when services were held at 1:30 o'clock at the Knob Lick Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Wm. Stewart, pastor of the M.E. Church, South, of Bonne Terre, an old friend of the family.
Beautiful and impressive music was rendered by Mrs. G. Holman and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Bull of St. Louis, and a quartet from the Murphy-Long Memorial Church of Farmington, composed of Miss Naomi Garner, Mrs. J. B. Graves and son, Ted, and J. C. Whitworth. They were accompanied at the piano by Martin Eichenlaub of Bonne Terre. Interment was in the Knob Lick cemetery, with the Masons of St. Francois County in charge of the services at the graveside.

John Henry, the six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rehkop, was the victim of quite a painful accident Friday of last week. Mrs. Rehkop had been doing some sewing, but had placed the garment on which she had been working across the back of a chair, leaving a needle in it. Little John Henry sat down in this same chair, having thrown his weight against the point of the needle, with the result that the needle pierced his back about a quarter of an inch above the kidneys. It was necessary to take the child to the Bonne Terre hospital to have the needle located and removed. It is said that if the needle had pierced the kidney instant death would have resulted. The little fellow is at home now and is doing nicely.

FIRE AT ICE PLANT SUNDAY NIGHT:
A fire broke out at the plant of the Flat River Ice and Cold Storage Company Sunday night shortly after 8 o'clock, but was checked before it had caused any great amount of damage. The damage has been conservatively estimated at $600.
The fire, which started in the roof, was discovered by Clarence Williams of East Flat River, who was passing the plant at the time. He immediately reported his discovery, and a call was sent to the National fire department. Some difficulty was experienced in checking the spread of the fire for the reason that the water pressure was down. The fire spread to the north gable of the building and for a time threatened to reach the ammonia tanks. Had this occurred, there is no doubt but that there would have been a destructive fire. Ammonia, when heated, generates a gas that is highly explosive.
The fire started near the flue which is thought to have been defective.
