LEAD BELT NEWS, Flat River, St. Francois Co. MO, Fri. Dec. 2, 1927.
MAN DIED FRIDAY NEAR GOFF SPRINGS--Identifed as J. H. Kennedy, Escaped From No. 4 Hospital:
Last Friday afternoon W. J. Hollman and Manuel Moses, who live in the section adjacent to Goff Springs, found a man near that station in great distress. He was alive, but unable to make any statement to them, and his condition appeared to be serious. They summoned help from Bonne Terre, some five miles away, and Pete Stringer went to the scene. Before Stringer reached the scene the man died. The body was brought to Bonne Terre, where it was identified as J. H. Kennedy, 35 years of age, former resident of St. Louis, but an inmate of No. 4 hospital, Farmington for the past two years.
The body was removed from Bonne Terre to Elvins, where it was placed in the undertaking rooms of coroner J. R. Horne. An inquest was held there Saturday morning. The jury returned a verdict of death due to a broken neck, cause or causes unknown. Dr. Paul Jones of Elvins examined the body and found it in that condition.
The dead man's wife and members of his immediate family came to Elvins Saturday and ordered the body shipped to St. Louis, where funeral services were held.
Kennedy had been an inmate of No. 4 Hospital for about two years and had given officials of that institution no trouble at all with the exception of a continual desire to escape. He disappeared from the institution Tuesday morning and a member of No. 4 staff said that representatives of the hospital had driven over quite a bit of this county in an effort to locate him. Thursday morning he appeared at the home of Ben. Morris, near Goff Springs, and was given his breakfast. He stated that he was a minister and was going north, but failed to say what destination he had in view. He was also given his dinner at the Morris home. After dinner Mr. Morris drove to DeSoto and saw nothing more of his guest until he was found the following afternoon. Mr. Morris stated that he did not suspect his visitor was not mentally sound until later in the day when it occurred to him that some of his actions had been rather peculiar.
Kennedy was an employee of the Western Union Telegraph Company in St. Louis prior to his illness several years ago. It was said by his relatives that he was working on an invention in line with his employment when his health failed and his mentality became impaired.
