THE BONNE TERRE STAR, Bonne Terre, St. Francois Co. MO, Fri. March 28, 1913.
A GOOD PILOT:
Owing to the heavy rains the funeral party which escorted the remains of Mrs. Mary Ferguson to the family burying grounds near Blackwell last Sunday, were compelled on the out going trip to go clear around by Vineland, in order to cross Big River on the bridge.
However, at Blackwell the party were fortunate in discovering a splendid river pilot in the person of William Polette, who very kindly rode ahead of each wagon load of the party and piloted them across the Big River ford near Blackwell when they returned.

GARAGE BURGLARIZED AT BISMARCK:
The garage of Frank Johnson, at Bismarck, was broken into last night (Thursday) and a large quantity of tire and accessories for automobiles was stolen. Entrance was gained to the building by breaking open the door. The robbery was committed about midnight, or shortly before. Sam Doss, of Desloge, was called to track down the thieves and reports favorable progress with the case. It is hoped and expected that the thieves will be apprehended shortly.
Bismarck has been suffering from an unprecedented series of robberies of late, with the evidence pointing to the fact that the depredations are being committed by outside parties. The News voices the hope that the miscreants will be speedily caught and severely dealt with at the hands of the law.

JOHN GRIFFORD, FORMER FLAT RIVER CITIZEN DIES IN CALIFORNIA:
John Grifford, 50 years old, who made his home in Flat River for many years, but has been residing at Escalon, Cal., since 1919, where he had a large fruit ranch, died in a hospital in Stockton, Cal., Monday, June 25, following an illness of several months duration. A couple of years ago he suffered a paralytic stroke and was confined to his home for some time. He recovered sufficiently, however, to be able to direct the work of his ranch. Early in March of this year, he callapsed from complications, and did not rally. He was taken immediately to the hospital in Stockton, where he remained until his death.
The funeral was held in Stockton Tuesday, and interment made in that place.
John Grifford was born in Ste. Genevieve County. In 1899, he was married to Miss Lydia Bennett, of Doe Run, who survives him. No children were born to this union.
Mr. and Mrs. Grifford lived in Flat River for many years, and were well and favorably known here. Mr. Grifford was a member of the local Odd Fellows organization, having retained his membership here until the time of his death.
For four years previous to their departure for California, Mr. and Mrs. Grifford made their home in Baxter Springs, Kas., where Mr. Grifford had a position as superintendent of the Admiralty Zinc Co.
Mr. Grifford was a cousin to Felix Bloom, and a brother-in-law of Mrs. J. B. Waring and John Bennett, of Flat River.
The following poem, by Edgar A. Guest, taken from Tuesday's Globe-Democrat, expresses the sentiments of his relatives and friends:
BY EDGAR GUEST
Sweet is the rest of those who lie
Under the grass and the open sky.
Pain no more shall come to them
The lips of censure are dumb to them.
Sorrow nor hurt nor shame may touch
The breasts of those whom we loved so much;
Age has lost the same as we,
Always beautiful now they'll be.
Safe are the souls of those who sleep
Where the trees are kind and the grass is deep.
Nover a care may find them there,
Never a fetter may bind them there;
Those who are living must shed their tears,
Bear the weight of the heavy years,
Lose their beauty and suffer pain,
But never the dead shall sigh again.
Mourn you not for the ones who lie
Under the grass and the open sky.
Never shall sin draw near to them,
Never shall terror bring fear to them;
They have gone home to the God above,
Sheltered now in His boundless love,
From all that maketh men's misery,
Always beautiful now they'll be.
