Jacqui Justice (adopted daughter of Burns & Pearl Clark) wrote:
"Pearl Flasher was a very stern woman. (I now attribute that to her German ancestry). She had a strong faith and belief in God and lived to see all of her children (and most of her grandchildren), and her husband saved. She emotionally kept the family together by prayer and believing God for whatever the family needed. Burns was a sensitive & careing man, working very hard to make ends meet. He loved people and loved to have company over. Whenever anyone came to the house during meal time, he always saw to it that an extra plate was on the table. And, he loved to joke and carry on. Pearl thought he was being silly. One specific childhood memory I have of them goes like this:
When I was 10 years old I got up one night a few weeks before Christmas to go the bathroom and I heard mama and daddy talking in the living room. Daddy was crying and saying that he didn't know what he was going to do for Christmas because he didn't have the money to buy us anything. (There were 5 of us still at home) I heard mama say, "Now, Burns. You know God will provide whatever we need. You need to exercise a little faith in God and let Him take care of it. I'm not a bit worried." I went back to bed without even going to the bathroom and cried myself to sleep because I had never heard my daddy cry before. When I got up the next morning, daddy was sitting by the stove. I didn't want to be a burden on him so I went over and told him that I didn't want anything for Christmas that year because I was too old to play with dolls and I really couldn't think of anything I wanted. He hugged me (with tears in his eyes) and told me not to worry about Christmas.
Christmas morning came and there was all kinds of things under the tree. There were dolls for the girls, knives & transistor radios for the boys, new night gowns and house slippers and play jewelry and even a bicycle. There was lots and lots of fruits and nuts. It was the best Christmas we ever had.
The children who were married and away from home had gotten together and bought Christmas for us because they knew daddy didn't have the money. Mama was right . . . . God did provide!
Mama and Daddy were as opposite as day and night, but they loved their children. We never went hungry or wanted for anything we really needed. Mama prayed and stayed home with us and daddy worked and provided for his family. They may not have been perfect - but, they were perfect for my brother and me."

Uncle Lew replied, "I'm going to run moonshine. That's all I know." Kirfman further stated, and he did. Uncle Lew was in and out of jail every little whipstitch.

Oral Legend: When John Robert, Sr. FLEISHER was a young boy he asked permission of his father to go into town to "watch them make music and dance." His father told him he could not go, but John slipped off and went anyway. A man was there dancing with another man's wife. The jealous husband shot and killed the man. Because John was there without permission, he was frightened and ran. He was apprehended, tried for murder, found guilty and was put in prison. The murderer confessed on his death bed and John Fleisher was then set free. At this time, it is not known how long John's prison term was or in what state this incident occured. John Fleisher is said to have changed the spelling of his last name to Flasher.
The 'Veterans's Census of 1890' states that John Flasher was a Private with Company A, Infantry, (possibly Union Army) January, 1862 to 16 August 1865, serving 3 yrs. 8 mos. At the time of the census, John Flasher was a resident of Bull Creek Township, Madison Co., N.C.
