JOHN FITZWATER KILLED IN MINE:
John Fitzwater, a well known operator in the mining district here, was found dead in the drift at No. 12 shaft, Leadwood, Sunday night [April 23, 1916]. Coroner English was notified and went out and held an inquest Monday morning.
From the evidence adduced at the inquest, it seems that Fitzwater was engaged in doing some draft work; he was a drift contractor; he started to his work Sunday morning about 8 o'clock and when he failed to return home that evening the family became uneasy about him and began an investigation resulting in finding the body within 8 or 8 feet of the bottom of the shaft.
The body was badly mangled but from the trail of blood it was apparent that the wounded man had crawled some 40 or 50 feet after being injured and before death ensued.
The deceased was well and favorably known among mining people here, having ben in the district abou sixteen years. Burial was in the K. of P. cemetery of which order deceased was an honored member.

Personen : Elvins Politte
The following biography was published in the History of Southeast Missouri, by Robert Sidney Douglas (1912):
HON. POLITTE ELVINS is engaged in the practice of law and the banking business in the city of Elvins, St. Francois county. A staunch and active Republican, he represented the thirteenth congressional district in the sixty-first congress of the United States, in which he made an admirable record and in which he had the distinction of being the youngest member.
Mr. Elvins was born at French Village, St. Francois County, Missouri, on the 16th day of March, 1878, and is the youngest of the three surviving children of Jesse M. and Zelma (Politte) Elvins. On the preceding pages of this publication is entered a memoir to his honored father, and the family data incorporated in said article are such as to render it unnecessary to repeat the same in the present sketch. {see previous post I just made to this Board on bio of Jesse M. Elvins}. Mr. Elvins is indebted to the public schools of his native county for his early educational discipline, which was supplemented by a course in Carlton College and the University of Missouri, at Columbia, from which he received the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1899, being forthwith admitted to the bar.
On the 25th day of November, 1901, he was married to Miss Florence Kells, of Arcadia, Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Elvins are popular factors in the social activities of the community and their pleasant home is known for its generous hospitality.
---------------------------------------------------
Here is the text of a couple of articles I posted previously which describe the later years of Mr. Politte Elvins:
The Lead Belt News, Friday, Feb. 19, 1943--
POLITTE ELVINS LEFT $100,000 TO St. L. U.
Politte Elvins, former Missouri Congressman and State Representative who died several weeks ago at McAllen, Texas of injuries suffered in an automobile accident, left the bulk of his $100,000 estate to St. Louis University to establish a contagious disease clinic, according to an Associated Press dispatch yesterday from Pharr, Texas, where he had lived in recent years.
His Will, filed for probate there, specified the university clinic was to be used particularly for persons in the 11 counties which in 1908 constituted the Thirteenth Congressional District. Persons living in St. Louis County, which he represented in the State Legislature, were to be accorded the same privileges.
Elvins, who served one term in Congress, was a member of the Missouri Legislature in 1926 and 1928. His last years in St. Louis were troubled ones. In 1935, the St. Louis County Probate Court held him incapable of managing his own affairs and committed him to the Glenwood Sanitarium. His wife divorced him in 1936. He was released from the sanitarium in 1937, after a jury found him to be of sound mind.
He left St. Louis shortly thereafter to live in Texas, and married again. --- Globe Democrat.
{Note: The town of Elvins in St. Francois County, Missouri, was named after Jesse and Zelma Elvins, early pioneers who had settled the area in the 1880's and had acquired a good portion of the land. Politte Elvins is a son of Jesse and Zelma Elvins.}

MRS. PRENTICE ELVINS:
Mrs. Prentice Elvins of Elvins, Missouri, died at 11:40 p.m. Monday, January 13, 1936, at the Bonne Terre Hospital, where she underwent a major operation on January 6. She was 62 years 5 months and 12 days of age.
Due to the serious illness of Mr. Elvins, the body was taken to the home of neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Burch, where it remained until Wednesday, when funeral services were conducted at the Elvins Methodist Church by the Rev. J. M. Bailey of Farmington. Burial was in Parkview Cemetery, under the direction of the Diemer Undertaking Company.
Emma Elizabeth Davis was born in St. Francois County, Missouri, August 1, 1873, the daughter of the late James Rankin and Elizabeth Davis. She spent her entire life in this county and on April 20, 1893, was united in marriage to Prentice Elvins. They became the parents of five children, one daughter, Viola, having preceded her mother in death on July 10, 1919.
She is survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Estella Werner of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and three sons, Talmer Elvins of Omaha, Nebraska; Homer Elvins of Wichita Kansas and Raymond at home. Also two brothers, A. S. Davis of Farmington and T. I. Davis of Gardena, California, and one sister, Mrs. J. W. Reddick of Oakland, California; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The deceased was converted in young womanhood and united with the Randolph Methodist Church later transferring her membership to the Elvins Christian Church where she and Mr. Elvins have faithfully labored for many years. She possessed a kindly, cheerful disposition, which endeared her to her family and a wide circle of friends.
The News extends sympathy to the bereaved family.
[Note: I'm not sure about Estelle's name of Werner mentioned above. At the time of Estelle's death in 1947, her obit indicated that she had been married to Alfred Johnstone for more than 20 years. Therefore, her last name would have been Johnstone (not Werner) at the time of her mother's death. Also, in Estelle's obit, her brother's name is shown as Tillman (not Talmer) Elvins. I don't know which is correct.]
