City Marshal Gillespie on Saturday night was badly beaten up and a young man, Martin Sherman, received a flesh wound in the breast from a shot fired from Gillespie's revolver.
For the past several weeks there has been considerable shooting at night on the streets. Saturday night there was a shot heard down about the Cook restaurant and the Marshal walked down that way. Marshal Gillespie states that he was walking along in that vicinity when Sherman came up beside him and without warning struck him in the face and knocked him down and hit him several times afterward. While down Gillespie fired a shot from his revolver, the shot hitting Sherman on a rib in the side and glancing off, making only a flesh wound. Gillespie cried for help and gave his revolver to Al Cleek who later turned it over to Mayor Matkin.
Gillespie and Sherman both had their wounds dressed and both were able to be out this week.
A short time after the Marshal was beat up, Ben Sherman, a brother of the other Sherman boy, hunted up Al Cleek and attacked him. Cleek, we are told, put up no fight, because he did not know what the fight was about and had no intention of mixing in the other fight.
We understand that Martin Sherman was arrested one day this week in connection with the affair and that he plead not guilty and will stand trial in Police Court next week. We are told that Sherman claims that the Marshal was trying to search him, and claims that the Marshal had no right to try to
search him unless he had papers.

Jasper Hays Wallen, born January 10, 1889, at Bismarck and died July 20, 1969, at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Detroit, Mich. He was the son of the late Marshall and May Wallen.
He is survived by: his wife, Rosa Wallen, Detroit; one son, Leonard E. Wallen, Detroit; one brother, Everett Wallen, Detroit; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Guthrie, Granite City, Illinois, and Mrs. Ruth Stuart, Detroit. One son, Alvin preceded him in death at the age of four.
Mr. Wallen, formerly of this area had lived in Detroit for 35 years.
Services were Friday, July 25, 2 p.m. at the chapel of Shipman & Sons, Bismarck, with the Rev. Robert Davis officiating. Burial was in Big River Cemetery.

Maurice Fillmore Westover, of Webster Groves, Mo., passed away at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Westover of Farmington, at 4:30 a.m. last Thursday, July 26, 1928, aged 46 years, 7 months and 20 days. Funeral services were conducted at the Murphy-Long Memorial M.E. Church South, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Rev. H. C. Tucker had charge of the services. Interment was at Parkview.
Maurice had been in poor health for the past year, suffering from pernicious anemia but his condition was not considered serious until about 6 weeks ago, when he was brought to the home of his parents in the hope that the change might prove beneficial.
He was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Choate on June 28, 1905. To this union, one child was born, a son, Meredith Westover, who with the wife survive him. He also leaves his parents, five sisters, Mrs. Walter Williams of Route 4, Farmington, Laura, Anna, Georgia and Della at home and two brothers, Paul, of Webster Groves and Raymond, of Huntington Park, Cal.
Maurice was a consecrated Christian, a loving son and husband. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Mrs. Carrie C. Westover, of Richmond Heights, Mo., passed away at St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis at 12:35 A. M., Monday, May 27, 1935, aged 50 years, 5 months and 26 days. She had been a sufferer for two months.
Funeral services were conducted at the Arthur J. Donnelly Parlors in St. Louis at ten o'clock Wednesday morning by Rev. R. L. Duckworth. The body was brought to Farmington and interred in the Westover lot at Parkview cemetery where a short service was conducted by Rev. Clarence Burton.
Carrie Cordelia Choate was born at Libertyville, Mo., on Dec 1, 1884, daughter of the late Joselp and Julia Hamm Choate. On June 28, 1905, she was united in marriage to Maurice F. Westover, who preceded her in death on July 26, 1928. To their union was born one son, J. Meredith Westover, who survives his parents. The deceased is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Annie Whittington, of Jefferson City, Mo.
The deceased had been a devoted member of the Methodist Church since the time of her marriage. We join in extending deepest sympathy to her son and other relatives in their bereavement.

Mrs. Carrie Mae Jones, nee Blackwell, was born on February 22, 1898, and died at her home in Desloge [St. Francois County, Missouri] on Sunday, September 1, 1940, after a lingering illness, aged 42 years.
On May 15, 1915, she was united in marriage to Grover [Lawrence] Jones, who survives. Six children, Paul, Clyde, Robert, Grover Jr., Eula Belle and Dorothy, all of Desloge, also mourn her loss.
Early in life she became a Christian and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Desloge where funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. by her pastor, Rev. J. R. Wagoner. Interment was in St. Francois Memorial Park. C. Z. Boyer Service
Note: Carrie was the daughter of Roda/Rhoda Blackwell (1881-1928), and granddaughter of James Sylvester Blackwell & Eliza Metts Blackwell of Jefferson County, Missouri. After Carrie's birth, Roda/Rhoda Blackwell became the wife of William Foster [or Foster William] Sansoucie.

John R. Harris of 618 Taylor Avenue, Flat River, died July 28 at Mineral Area Hospital at the age of 91. He was born April 27, 1878, in Bonne Terre.
Surviving are: his wife, Carrie Reynolds Harris, Flat River; four children, Orville Harris, High Ridge, Mo.; Eugene Harris, Flat River; Howard Harris of St. Louis; and Sophia (Mrs. J. A. Fox) of Farmington. Also one sister, Juanita Pettus of Bonne Terre, ten grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two infant children.
Mr. Harris was a member of the Desloge Baptist Church.
Services were Wednesday, July 30, 2 p.m. at Murphy L. Sparks Chapel, Flat River, with Rev. Don Stanley officiating. Interment was in Workman Cemetery, Flat River.

FARMER SLAYS WIFE, FOUR LITTLE CHILDREN AND THEN HIMSELF.
Bodies found by Mail Carrier in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri.
Farmington, Mo., July 1 -- H. S. Price, a farmer, living at Avon in Ste. Genevieve County, ten miles east of Farmington, his wife and four little girls, aged from 2 to 10 years, were all found dead at their home by neighbors about 10 o'clock this morning. When Elmer Craig, carrier on rural route three out of Farmington reached the mail box at the Price farm he found a note in the box addressed to him. It said: "Please let everyone know that we are all dead. H. S. Price."
At the bottom of the note were some instructions about notifying the coroner and some other parties. No reason whatsoever was assigned for the destruction of his family, which evidently Price had determined upon.
Craig notified neighbors and when they went to the Price home they found all the family dead, as the note stated they would be.
Mrs. Price and the children were dressed in night attire. They had evidently been knocked in the head as they slept. Their bodies had been taken from the bed and laid side by side in a front room. Price's body was near his wife's and across it lay a shotgun. He had come to his death by a gunshot wound in the abdomen, evidently self-inflicted. The bodies indicated that death had occurred several hours previously.
Price was a son of the late Sterling Price, professor of Latin and Greek in the Missouri University. His mother, with whom the son had always lived, died May 20 last. Grief over her death and over the serious illness of an only brother, Paul Price, who has been seriously ill at St. Luke's Hospital,
St. Louis, for several weeks is believed to have driven him to the verge of insanity.
An inquest was held this afternoon----Globe Democrat.
Paul Price, the brother of H. S. Price was at one time a member of the faculty of Flat River school. He was also connected with Bonne Terre schools for a time. The H. S. Price family lived in Flat River at one time having left here to located on the farm at Avon.
The funeral service for the Price family was held at Copenhagen cemetery, Wednesday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. J. M. Bailey, pastor of the Farmington Christian church.
