Social Security Number: 360-32-7854

Last Residence: Belleville, Saint Clair, Illinois
The following is from the Metro-East Journal Magazine, Sunday, April 4, 1976:
Joe Guetterman, rock hound par excellence.
The flock of peacocks in Joseph Guetterman's St. Clair farmyard prepares you for something- and someone- extraordinary. Peacocks roosting and strutting around, as at home on the farm as chickens. "There're about 40 of them out there," Guetterman said, "We bought a few from Texas and they kept procreating." Peacocks, however, are not what Guetterman is all about. But they give you insight about a man who loves the unusual.
Guetterman, a Belleville Area native, is a renowned rock hound- a label affectionately attached to a person who collects rocks. He also is a lapidary- an artisan who fashions rocks. At 77, he appears tireless. He brushes aside a sit- down interview, preferring, instead, to show what he's been doing.
He invites you to touch and weigh and inspect his treasures, which fill cabinets, drawers and display cases all about his home. He has installed special lights to accentuate most of his displays.
Guetterman, a retired farmer, and his wife, Helen, his companion of rocks hound, live in a comfortable farmhouse near Belleville (St. Clair County, Illinois) with their collection of rocks, an aging dog and the peacocks.
His hobby has taken him all over the world in search of unusual rocks. After 33 years, he can boast the merchants who think they have the most unusual stones find that Joe Guetterman already has several of the same kind, but even more unusual. His fame is best indicated by the fact that photographs of rocks in his collection appear in Encyclopedia Britannica.
The Guettermans' collection contains hundreds - perhaps thousands of rocks. The Guettermans found most of the rocks, and Guetterman does the cutting and polishing.
There are countless items of interest. Teeth and petrified bones of prehistoric animals, which are rock forms. Several different types of sea coral. An African rock embedded with rubies - not the precious kind, but rubies. Can you imagine holding a wooly mammoth's knuckle in your hand? . . . Or was it mastodon's knuckle?
The Guettermans don't get confused, and that in itself is amazing because of the size of their collection and the number of years spent collecting. Yet, with almost every rock or artifact is a tale about how it was found, where it was found and why it is special.
There are the ivory projectiles from an Arctic sea animal that they saw in a shop in New York, rushed in and bought. They then carried the six foot long, spear-like treasures away through stares, it was quite an experience, Mrs. Guetterman says.
The Guettermans used to go on rock hounding expeditions at least twice a year. They have explored almost all the continental United States and have done extensive hunting in Mexico. They have been to Africa, India, Brazil, Europe, Madagascar, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, Alaska - and St. Clair County (Illinois).
Everywhere they go there are other rock hounds. The Guettermans are interested in rocks with unusual formations, but for almost every rock hound there is a different interest, Guetterman said.
There are no set of rules for rock hounding. You start by collecting rocks that interest you, "If you like it, fine," Guetterman says. The knowledge, the expertise, and the ability to recognize different stones, come with time. To be a lapidary, you need a cutting wheel, patience and imagination. Guetterman's wheel was made by a friend from parts of two antique sewing machines.
His shop is in a room adjacent to the kitchen and contains pounds and pounds of stones awaiting his lapidary touch. He has cut gems in every imaginable shape, tiny and large. One of his showpieces is a large topaz fashioned into a sphere.
The fireplace in the collection room is the most eye-catching display. It is completely embedded with colorful stones. But Guetterman isn't one to pat himself on the back. There's to much else to do, even though he seems to have done everything a rock hound could ever want to do.
He's got several projects going, but his pet for the moment is designing a cross with gems. The theme for much of Guetterman's lapidary work is religious. He has done a scene of the Last Supper and the Madonna and Child.
Religious themes provide the greatest opportunity for an artist to show his skills and talent because of the tremendous emotion involved, Guetterman said.
The path to the Guetterman's door is known by rock hounds far and near. School children also are frequent and welcome visitors.
He says the time he spends with visitors is worth it to interest someone in the love of rocks.
He didn't want to talk about how he became interested in rocks. It has to be with recuperating after some hay fell on his head many years ago. But he said, that insignificant. Besides, Joseph and Helen Guetterman have a lot more pleasant experiences to savor.

However, because of her young age she wasn't admitted, but later on she applied to the Poor Handmaids and was accepted. She was in the motherhouse for 10 years with health problems, and the doctor had told her that she would not live to be 27 years old. But be that as it may, she lived to be 81. In addition, it's believed she was the first one of the Poor Handmaids to get a master's degree.

Obituary (1927)- Unknown Newspaper in Saline County, Kansas:
Mrs. Franciska Weis A Resident Of Saline County For Almost 45 Years.
Mrs. Franciska Weis, widow of the late Phillip Weis, residing four miles northwest of Hedville, died at 11:10 o'clock Friday night at the family residence, at the age of 91 years, 11 months and 14 days. Bronchitis was given as cause of death. Mrs. Weis was born February 21, 1835 in Germany and came here in 1882, settling in Pleasant Valley township. Her long residence in Saline County has won a wide circle of friends throughout the county. She is survived by nine children, Lizzie King, Blockhouse, Wash.; Fannie Mesler, Oswego; Phillip Weis, Brookville; Lewis Weis, Brookville; Mary Farrington, Phillipsburg; John Weis, Salina; Henry Weis, Salina; Leonard Weis, Weskan; and an adopted daughter, Nellie Weis; a sister Mrs. Barbara Wagner, Norborne, Mo.; 58 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Rush Smith Funeral Home with Rev. J. H. Kuhn in charge. There will be a short service in the home at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. Interment will be held in the Gypsum Hill Cemetery (City of Salina, Saline County, Kansas).
Obituary (1927) - Unknown Newspaper in Norborne, Carroll County, Missouri:
Mrs. Franciska Weis, 91 years old, a sister of Mrs. Barbara Wagner and the aunt of Sam and Len Wagner, of Norborne and community, died last Saturday at her home near Salina, Kansas. Mrs. Weis went to Saline County, Kansas, with her husband and family in 1852 and had lived on one farm since that time. She is survived by 129 descendents, as follows: Nine children, 58 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren, Mrs. Weis visited her sister, Mrs. Wagner, who is 80 years old, a number of years ago.
The below information was provided by Eddie L. Weis:
Franciska could sign her name in English, and spoke English with a German accent. However, she could not read English. No matter where Franciska was at, she would always say Grace at the dinner table. She read her German bible, but very seldom attended church. She especially enjoyed knitting mittens, and did fancy work in making quilts.
The family would come to her home nearly everyday, especially since her family was so large with all the grandchildren. When vistors came over, she always had candy and cookies out in a dish. For certain grandchildren she would always kept sardines boiled in oil for them.
One thing Francis would not allow is tobacco in the house. Tobacco smoke made her sick, so her sons and grandsons would have to hide there pipes when they entered her house.
Francis liked only lemon ice cream. So with her husband she would get ice from the Mulberry during the winter and put it away in their own ice house packed in straw. During most of the spring and summer Francis then would have her lemon ice cream made from cream. Later as she became older she would buy it in Hedville.
During the late 1890's, telephone crews came through the area placing wooden poles and running telephone lines. Like many of the farmers, Francis would feed the men. However, it soon became apparent to these men that Francis baked delicious pies, so on several occasions they would made additional excuses to come to her home. While there, they schemed using all their skills to divert her attention as they would steal one of her pies. After the loss of two pies, Francis made one with a onion and cotton filling, and then purposely set it out to get the telephone crews attention. She waited for the men to come with their excuses, usually for water. Upon them leaving she noticed they had snatched the onion and cotton pie, which gave her quite a time of merriment for the day.
Phillip her husband kept and old gentle gray horse just for her. She had her own buggy to travel around the Township to visit all the extanded family members. However, sometimes Franciska would walk the two miles to Hedville to cash her husbands Civil War pension check from the government. It was easier than harnessing her old gray horse.

Obituary (1933) - Fowler, Meade County, Kansas:
Clotilda Weber, daughter of Bernard and Mary Weber, was born at Norborne, Missouri, May 19 1912. When a small child, she came with her parents to Fowler, Kansas and spent all her life with and for her parents. Seven years ago she graduated from St. Anthony's school here. As a pupil she was diligent and alert full of life and cheer, making her a favorite with her schoolmates as well as with her teachers. After graduation she stayed at home, happy to be able to help wherever possible, to make the life of her good parents and brothers and sisters comfortable and happy. Being endowed by nature with a mirthful and childlike disposition her very presence radiated sunshine and happiness. Her untimely demise has created a great void in that happy, Christian home. She will be missed much for a long time. She was a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality, faithful and ever interested in all the sodality. The sodality will miss her, but will not forget her in its prayers and monthly communions.
Ever since Christmas the deadly germs of pneumonia were making inroads into her young and strong constitution. And she fought bravely and resignedly for ten weeks to stay off the hand of death. Doctors, nurses and her family did everything possible to help her win the fight. However, all proved futile, and after having received all the spiritual ministration of the Church, her young soul took flight to the great and mysterious of realm of eternity, to rest forever in the bosom of God from whence we come. Her mortal remains were laid to rest in the Fowler cemetery, Thursday morning, March 2nd (1933). A great crowd of relatives and friends were present at the Requiem High Mass in St. Anthony's church, to pay their last respects and say a prayer for her soul, May she rest in peace.
St. Anthony's parish and school wish to extend sincere feelings of sympathy to the bereaved parents, Mr. And Mrs. Ben Weber, her three brothers, Alban of North Dakota, Bernard Jr., and Oliver of Fowler and her sister, Mrs. Wm Meng of Waterloo.
Card of Thanks -
We wish to thank our many friends for their acts of kindness and words of Sympathy extended us during the illness and after the death of our Beloved Clotilda. Also for the floral offerings and spiritual bouquets.

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Meng
Additional Information: Bernard Louis Weber told how he held his sister Clotilda Elizabeth up to sit in bed so she could cough and get her breath before she died. Her mother said she sat up and held her arms out to 'Jesus', then died and slumped back.
