Family Memories. Written by Charles E. Rinck about 1988 for First Edition of the St. Clair County History Book.
Jacob John Gundlach, Sr. was the second son of five known children of Philipp Mathaus Gundlach, Sr., and Susanna Schutz. He was born at Niederhochstadt, Nassau, Germany on 6 March, 1825. The history of his parents and several grandparents are addressed elsewhere within these works.
Jacob, at the age of 17 years, accompanied his parents, sisters and brothers to this country, arriving at the Port of New York, 25 August, 1842, aboard the ship "Duchess de Orleans, from the Port of Le Havre, France. The family came to this country in November 1842, settling on a 320 acre farm, then three miles East of Belleville, Illinois. Here, Jacob and two brothers worked on their father's farm, contributing towards the beginning of success stories which are generally common knowledge to the citizenry of this county.
With skillful planning and thirteen years of working on his father's farm, a "nest egg" was able to be assembled for his future. On 13 March, 1855, at St. Peter's Cathedral in Belleville, he was united in marriage with Christina Acker. She was a native of Ruppertsberg, Rhein-Pfalz, Germany, born 29 May 1835, a daughter of Christophe Acker and Thekla Mees. The history of her parents and European background are recorded elsewhere within this history.
After this marriage, Jacob and his new wife, lived on his father's farm, which was later divided with his brother Philip John receiving 177 1/2 acres, and Jacob receiving 157 acres. Jacob's parents remained on the smaller parcel with Ja cob's family until the parents death.
Jacob and Christine, in 1857, started with their family of eleven children, here on this farm. Those children are listed within this genealogy report.
About 1882, Mr. Gundlach was being troubled with asthma, but he had learned to tolerate that problem, enjoying life the best that he could. In the latter part of the 1890's Mr. Gundlach moved from the farm, and built a brick home in Belleville at 606 East First St. (now East Washington St.) Here, Mr. and Mrs. Gundlach enjoyed their final years.
On 28 April 1902, Mr. Jacob John Gundlach Sr., after being severely ill for four weeks, died at his Belleville residence attaining 77 years of age. He was buried in Green Mount Cemetery, St. Clair Township, in this county.
His life had been fruitful to him, his wife, and eleven children. However, to amass the wealth and reputation that he had was no accident, but is prime testimony of the effects of being reasonably frugal, a good planner and a wise investor. His will called for the distribution of an estimated total value of $197,000.00 amongst his widow and eleven children. Within the estate, parcels of property included 928 acres of rural acreage, plus one city lot in East St. Louis and one lot in Belleville, over and above his widow's residence. Nine of his children were given deeds to tracts of land ranging from 102 1/2 acres to 180 acres, with cash a djustments to cause each to share equally.
Jacob's widow, Mrs. Christina (Acker) Gundlach, survived her husband for 14 years. She died at 81 years of age on 23 July 1916, in Belleville. She was laid to rest next to her loving husband.

Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. I did not die.
