78-YEAR OLD VETERAN RECEIVED DIPLOMA
FARMINGTON - It was a long time coming, but he took it all in stride.
Raymond Louis Pratt couldn't make his high school graduation because he was serving his country in the armed forces. But the former Farmington student "graduated" Tuesday night.
Pratt was one of a handful of former World War I, World War II, and Korean veterans having received an honorary diploma through recent bill passage. The state law allows veterans of those three wars to receive diplomas of graduation through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, or DESE.
Pratt was a former student of Farmington High School. While the state offers an "honorary diploma," the Farmington R-7 School District also gave the veteran a "Farmington High School" diploma as well.
The 78-year-old veteran said he was grateful for the consideration and joked about attending the prom and other graduation activities.
