The following is a newspaper article from The Waterloo Times, (Monroe County, Illinois)Thursday, May 31, 1894:
Peter Kipping had a narrow escape from a serious (if not, perhaps, a fatal) accident, Monday evening at the depot in this city. In attempting to get on the train he caught hold of the iron rod with his left hand and was swing around the wrong way and thrown down. Wm. Lang, who was fortunately standing by, caught him or he would have most surely gone down between the cars and we shudder to think what might have bee the result. He succeeded however in getting on the car, and by this time is doubtless at Buford, Mo., where he is to be married to-day to miss Julia Nose.

Goodspeeds History of SE Missouri, page 643:
John D. Highley, proprietor of the livery and feed stable of Farmington, a native of Washington County, Mo., was born in 1846, and is the son of James and Mary (Wildman) Highley, and grandson of John H. Highley, who was born in Virginia, but moved to Bath County, Ky., and in 1824 moved to Washington county, Mo., locating near Caledonia. James was four years old when he came to Missouri. In 1842 he married Miss Mary Wildman, who was born in Washington County, Mo., in 1826. She died in 1857, and one year later he moved to St. Francois County, and bought 304 acres west of Farmington. In 1858 he married Miss Martha Howerton, who is a native of St. Francois County. Mr. Highley is the father of fifteen children--seven by the first marriage and eight by the second. John D. was educated in the common schools, and assisted in tilling the soil until 1878, when he came to Farmington, and he and his brother, Robert, established a livery and feed stable. At the end of nine months, he sold his interest to Mr. John C. Crowder, and then moved to Jefferson and Harrison Streets, and established a livery and feed stable of his own; remained there until March 1886, then moved to Liberty Street, bought the stable belonging to T. C. Highley, and from that date until the present has conducted the business. He keeps twelve horses, five buggies, two spring wagons, one carriage, and has a first-class stable. In 1864 he married Miss Jennie R. Thomasson, who is a native of St. Francois County, and to them were born three children; Laura A., Emma E., and John Hugh. Mr. Highley is a Democrat in politics, and in 1883 he was elected city marshall. He was re-elected in 1885 and gain in 1887. He is a member of the K. of H., and he and his family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
Note: The below is from an obituary clipping obtained from the Farmington Library, St. Francois County, Missouri. Name of newspaper was not noted on obituary. The dates of 1846-1933 were handwritten on clipping.
FARMINGTON'S OLDEST BUSINESS MAN DIES:
The death of J. D. (Harve) Highley, which occurred at 7:15 a.m., Monday, in his 88th year, marked the passing of Farmington's oldest business man and a much beloved citizen. "Uncle Harve," as he was called by everyone, was truly a friend to humanity. He loved our people and they all loved him. News of the accident in which he sustained a fracture of one of his hips a week before his death was received with genuine regret and grave apprehension of the outcome by all our people.
Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. Clarence Burton, at the Murphy-Long Memorial M. E. Church, South, at ten o'clock Wednesday morning and was largely attended. Interment was in the Masonic cemetery. John D. Highley was born near Caledonia in Washington County, Mo., on Feb. 14, 1846, the son of James and Mary Wildman Highley. His father was twice married and to him were born 15 children, eight by his first marriage and seven by the second. John D., therefore, had 14 brothers and sisters, comparable in number with many of the pioneer families in Missouri. John D. was a grandson of John H. Highley, a native of Virginia, who later moved to Bath County, KY., and then to Washington County, Mo., in 1824;, settling on a farm near Caledonia.
When John D. was only 12 years of age, his parents moved to St. Francois county and since that time until the day of his death, John D. continued to reside in Farmington and vicinity.
In 1864 he was united in marriage to Rebecca Jane Thomasson. To their union three children were born -- Laura Ann, who later became Mrs. A. S. Davis and who passed away in 1925; Emma Elizabeth, now Mrs. B. J. Robinson of Farmington, and John Hugh who died at the age of five years. The wife and mother passed away in 1922. Besides the one daughter, Mrs. Robinson, the deceased is survived by his two sons-in-law, Dr. Robinson and A. S. Davis, two grandchildren, Lelia (Mrs. E. J. McKinney, Jr.,) and Dr. John B. Robinson, also three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrrs. Lucinda Huddleston, of near Bismarck; one half brother, Harry E. Highley, and three half sisters, Mrs. John Mitchell, Mrs. P. G. Hunt and Mrs. W. J. Bruett, all of Farmington and vicinity.
"Uncle Harve" located in Farmington in 1878, engaging in the feed and livery stable business. He conducted a successful business for a quarter of a century retiring about 30 years ago. For three successive terms, he served as City Marshal and for one term as a member of the City Council.
For more than 50 years he has been a member of the Methodist Church South. He was a familiar figure about town, always having a cheery greeting for everyone and always ready to extend help to those in distress. His genial face and kindly greeting will be much missed by our people.
