INTERVIEW WITH RALPH WALKINGSTICK:
Edmond, Oklahoma
The Cherokee Indian Tribe never lived in tepees or in tents. We lived in houses made of bark or logs. Our tribes were living in that sort of house in small villages when the white man came to this country. We cooked over open fires out of doors, in pottery which we made ourselves. The log house of today is a copy of the Cherokee house of years ago.
We never moved around much, except on our yearly hunts for meat for the winter.
In 1836 the Indians were forced to migrate from Georgia and Tennessee. This journey was called the 'Trail of Tears'.
My uncle, Ben Walkingstick, was among those who finally arrived, sick, weary and half-starved. I remember the terrible tale he told of that trip. I also knew quite a few others by the names of 'Sixkiller', 'Old Man Wolf', 'Backwater', 'Terrapin', 'Ross', 'Mays', and 'Rat'.
My grandfather was a farmer. He raised practically everything. He owned great herds of paint ponies. The men wore moccasins and had feathers in their hats. We made our dyes and paints out of certain types of clay, stones and herbs. For different colors these things were mixed.
The Cherokee Tribe is the only tribe having a secret society. It is called 'Keetoowah'. It is the only one of it's kind. The Kee-too-wahs have a festival for four or five days each year. They hold their meetings in a little log cabin about ten miles from the Arkansas River at Gore. The old organization of leaders were called 'Medicine Men'. Two hundred years of more ago, a few of these old medicine men were gathered together on their knees, in a circle, praying. Suddenly a fire sprung up in their midst. This was an omen to them. That fire has been kept burning constantly ever since. Someone is there all the time to keep it going. It is located at the cabin where they hold their meetings. Everything is secret. All of them are fullblood
My father was a lawyer, the first full blood Indian to practice in the United States Courts. I attended grade school in Tahlequah. Our teachers were all Indians. No white children were allowed to attend without paying tuition. After leaving there I entered Bacone College, and later Dartmouth of Hanover, New Hampshire.
When I was a child we had our own government. Chief Harris was Chief of the tribe about the time tribal government was dispensed with.
We were friendly with all tribes except the Osages.
There was not much game in the Cherokee Nation and the men wanted to go to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
To get there they had to cross land belonging to other tribes. These other tribes were not so favorable about that, so the government granted the Cherokee tribe a strip of land from the Western boundary of the Cherokee Nation to the Arkansas River, and due West to the Rockies. This strip was thirty or thirty-five miles wide. It was called the 'Cherokee Outlet' or Strip. I was opened for settlement in 1893.

Addition information from family notes:
Henry Martin Bradford was born in 1831 in GA. He resided in the Lookout Mountain area of Dade County, which was formed out of Walker County on Dec. 25, 1837. His mail would have been received at Rising Fawn near the County seat of Trenton. Martin, as he was called, was a lacksmith by trade and could make two nails with one heating of the iron. It was said that he was an honest and fair man in his dealings but wouldn't take any "guff" off of anybody.
He enlisted in the Civil War in June 1862. He was a private in "F" Company of the CSA in the 34th Reg. of GA under the command of Capt.
Brock. The story is told that for two days and 2 nights before the Battle of Chicamauga, (fought Sept. 19-20, 1863), Martin spent his whole time shoeing horses and mules getting ready for battle.
A letter from the War Dept. in Washington, DC, shows evidence that Henry M. Bradford was captured at Vicksburg, MS on July 4, 1863 with the rest of his company and was parolled at the same place on July 8, 1863. The records further show that he subscribed to the oath of amnesty to the US at Chattanooga, TN, March 30, 1863. [these dates are suspect] The signing of this oath automatically made him a deserter from the CSA and to break the oath would make him a deserter to the US. After his death, when his widow applied for a Confederate pension, her request was denied for the reason that Martin was a deserter. For what reason he deserted we do not know.
It is known that Martin had owned some slaves and these slaves would pull a small plow. When he returned from the war, Martin gave the slaves their freedom. One slave, called "Old man Mose" refused to leave saying, "If I is a free nigger, you can't make me go," so Martin gave him a piece of land on his property.
After the war, Martin seemed to wander and drift from one place to another. Since he was a blacksmith, he possibly settled for a time near
Chattanooga, TN, where ironworks were booming during reconstruction. It's also possible he moved with the building of the railroads. It is said he lived in Pulaski, TN, St. Joseph and Sedalia, MO, VanBuren, AR, Short, OK as well as Lee's Creek. He finally arrived in Stilwell, OK in the autumn of 1883. Stilwell was at that time still Indian land and part of the great Cherokee Nation. Martin remained in the Stilwell area for the rest of his life and died of Brites disease at the age of 75. According to Lydia Barnes, Martin got kicked in the head by a mule and lost his mind before he died.
Martin had a sister named Susie who married the brother of Martin's first wife. This made Martin's first son Noah a double cousin to the
Robison children because brother and sister had married brother and sister. Martin's second wife was believed to have been a sister of his first wife. This would have made her children double cousins also. I can't help but wonder if she was killed during the war as he was married to his thrid wife Emma on Sept. 30, 1865, the year before the war ended. The following notice appeared in the May 26, 1906 issue of the Stillwell Standard: "Mr. Bradford of Baron died on the 17th of old age and was buried Saturday at Pea Vine Cemetery. He was an aged and honored citizen, well liked by all who know him, and leaves many relatives and friends to morn (sic) his loss."
