Personen : Johnson Gustav "Gust" Emanuel
Gustaf was born Jan. 1, 1879, Monsteras "Fodelsebok: lists the parents as "Joh. G. Jonsson and Christine Svensdtr".
After Gust did his military service, he immigrated to Wisconsin to join his brother John Johnson in West Superior, Wisconsin.
Gustav Emanuel Johansson changed his name to Gustav "Gust" Emanuel Johnson after he moved from Sweden to Kent, King County, Washington, USA. Swedish records have him leaving Sweden in 1902.
He departed from Liverpool, England, May 9, 1902 and arrived at Ellis Island, New York, NY, May 19, 1902 on the steamship the Cymric, operated by the White Star Line.
Ship passenger record:
Name: Johanson Gustaf
Estimated Birth Year: About 1879
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Occupation: Laborer
Port of Departure: Liverpool, United Kingdom
Place of Origin: Swedish
Ship Name: S.S. Cymric
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Gustav Emanuel Johnson was in the Midwest from May 1902 to some time in 1904 or 1905 when he moved to Washington State. At one time, it's known he was in Braham, Isanti County, Minnesota.
The following notes were written by his daughter-in-law, Ardis Johnson Svenning:
He (Gust) traveled by train to Superior, Wisconsin. He was employed in a saw mill as the fire tender. He was proud of his ability to maintain just the right temperatures for the steam engines and for his record of being a dependable worker. He spoke no English.
But on Saturday night the loggers and sawmill workers went on a weekly rip snorting drunk. They sang, and swore and fought among themselves. They sought out Gustaf to include him but he hid behind the boilers and listened. He learned some basic English not taught anywhere else. In their mixture of English, German, and whatever languages were spoken mostly by European immigrants, Gust learned of the district in Superior where some forms of entertainment were available. He visited the area. There were red lights in the upstairs windows and girls and women calling in friendly English to him. When he said "no" they aimed and emptied the "pee" pots on him. He ducked real fast.
In the spring of 1905 (April to June sometime) Gust took the train to Kent. His brother, John had already moved west and was living in the bunkhouse and working in the mill on the Iverson place on SE 240th. When Gust came to Kent he went to Sipes livery stable to ask for a buggy. The price to take him to East Hill was $4.00. He said, "I vork fer a whole veek fer $4.00, I vill valk to mind brodder." As he climbed up Summit (the only road leaving Kent going east) and stopped to rest in mid-hill, he climbed a stump to rest and looked over the valley saying to himself, "This looks like a green heaven and I will stay here forever". The Irish Catholics had settled the valley along with the German, and Swiss-Italians. They had certainly chosen the best soil and turned the land into beautiful farms. He proceeded north to what is now James St. and headed east about four miles along the muddy road that was once called the North Road and now is SE 240th Street. That road stopped at the mill at the top of a hill and from there became a trail into Soos Creek which was being settled by the Finnish immigrants. He found his brother at the mill and also found some work to do.
Later Gust moved to Seattle and worked on construction jobs on the waterfront as a laborer. In later years he pointed out many old brick buildings which he had worked on. One of his bosses (employers) was Alstrom of Alstrom Construction. Alstrom's wife had died leaving him with children. Gust and John sponsored their sister, Amelia's immigration from Sweden to work for Alstrom. She cared for his children and they were soon married and their daugher, Dorothy, was born in 1911. Amelia had tuberculosis and died in 1913. Dorothy was raised by her father and half sisters. Their home was on Denny Hill. Gust had lived on the lot in a tent while he worked for Alstrom. This house was left standing when the hill was sluiced down to fill in Elliott Bay and Gust would point it out to us forty years later.
Maybe about 1907 Gust bought half an interest in a farm with his brother, John. It was the present Moelendorf place on 132 SE. When his brother married the new wife (Laura) didn't like Gust and would lock him out of the house so his brother paid off the investment he had made and that was probably when Gust bought the land with Jens Berg.
About 1909 Gust and Jim (Jens) Berg bought 30 acres from a family named Peterson. The house was a typical homesteaders- one or two rooms with an upstairs bedroom. Gust bought out Jim's interest and in the following 3 or 4 years rebuilt the house. In 1913 he met a visiting school teacher, Anna Otto, from Minnesota. She was teaching school in Idaho and was spending the summer with her uncle, Ole Otto, in a house about 1/2 mile west of Gust's place. They corresponded for three years. In 1916 they met in Portland and were married. He brought her back to the prettiest house on the road.
