LEAD BELT NEWS, Flat River, St. Francois Co. MO, Fri. Dec. 20, 1957:
TORNADO STRUCK NEAR FARMINGTON WEDNESDAY - CHILD KILLED, MUCH PROPERTY DAMAGE:
For the second time in seven months, St. Francois County suffered heavy damage from a tornado, Wednesday afternoon. The vicinity south of Farmington suffered heavy property damage and a child was fatally injured.
The out-of-season tornado roared through a number of Illinois and Missouri municipalities, causing six deaths and injuring at least 70 persons. Apparently hit hardest was Murphysboro, Ill., where four persons were reported dead.
Robert Shannon, 7 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Shannon of the Libertyville community, died Wednesday afternoon at the Mineral Area Osteopathic Hospital of injuries received in the tornado. The baby received a fractured skull and other internal head injuries and died at 4:10 a little over two hours after the tornado hit.
Mrs. Cash Lunsford, the child's grandmother who was with him at the time was also taken to the Mineral Area Osteopathic Hospital, her main injury being a severely lacerated right foot. She was later taken by Miller ambulance to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis for specialized treatment for the foot.
Several houses other than the Shannon home were leveled by the tornado. The Otto Stadter home was demolished and all of the buildings on the Jennie Boyd place were destroyed except the house, it was reported.
A huge amount of damage was done at the Harry Kollmeyer place on Highway 67 about six miles south of Farmington. The roof of the brick Kollmeyer residence was badly damaged as well as the porches and windows. A frame dwelling on the place, occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Orville Koester and their son, Donald, was leveled as well as a hay barn, milking parlor and a brick garage. No one was at home at Kollmeyers but the Koesters saw the twister coming and ran for the Kollmeyer storm cellar. Mr. Koester is employed by Mr. Kollmeyer, a distributor for Pevely milk. Several vehicles, including a lumber-loaded truck, were overturned and damaged.
No damage to power lines in Farmington was reported, but electrical service was cut off shortly before two o'clock Wednesday and was off for four hours. Union Electric's main feeder lines between there and Mine La Motte were damaged, causing the interruption in service in Farmington.
Storm warning alerts were broadcast for the area between West Plains, Mo., and Farmington, continuing up to 6:00 p.m., Wednesday.
Phil Pardon, local Union Electric Company manager, stated yesterday that two 33,000 and one 138,000 volt circuits were blown down between Farmington and Fredericktown, near the Clearview School and the Harry Kollmeyer farm. Service in Farmington was cut off at 1:53 p.m. and restored at 6:12 p.m. A few scattered customers on rural lines were still without power yesterday.

FRANK ZIMMER LOSES FOOT IN ACCIDENT:
Frank Zimmer, of Flat River, employed as an electrician by the St. Louis Smelting & Refining Works of the National Lead Company at their No. 7 shaft, Pimville, was the victim of an accident Saturday morning about 11:45 which resulted in the loss of his left foot. He was caught between two underground motors and his ankle crushed to that extent that, after receiving emergency treatment at the Company hospital at St. Francois he was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, St. Louis, where the amputation took place. He was accompanied to St. Louis by his brother, Joe Zimmer.
At the point of accident, a motor being operated by motorman Smith had stopped at the poor rock tipple to await the unloading of ore by another motor being driven by motorman Lindsey and switchman Asher at the ore tipple, some thirty-five feet away. While awaiting Smith called Zimmer to adjust his controller, and while doing this the second motor got out of control temporarily and moved back, colliding with the first one. Zimmer was caught between the two motors and was unable to clear himself in time to avoid the crash.
Mr. Zimmer is married and has two children. He has lived in and around the Lead Belt for a number of years and is widely known. He has a host of friends who sincerely regret the unfortunate occurrance.

Obituary - Judy Kollmeyer Dies From Exhaust Fumes:
The carbon monoxide death of a Farmington woman, discovered by neighbors Tuesday afternoon, has been ruled "not accidental" by Coroner Ted Boyer and no inquest will be conducted, since the death was obviously suicide.
Mrs. Harry (Judy) Kollmeyer was found dead sitting behind the wheel of her car in the closed garage at the family home at 625 Warren Street.
Sheriff Ken Buckley was called to the scene and entered the garage after neighbors observed the woman through a garage window. The neighbors had become alarmed when Mrs. Kollmeyer did not answer her phone earlier in the morning and afternoon and went to investigate at 1:30 p.m.
Farmington police said the car appeared to be out of gas and that the engine had overheated and boiled over onto the garage floor.
Mrs. Kollmeyer was last seen alive by friends who had visited at the home until about 9:30 Monday night.
The coroner said the woman appeared to have been dead about twelve hours when the body was discovered.
Jewell (Judy) Kollmeyer was born July 19, 1919, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Mrs. Sadie Deevers Schwetman and the late Louis Henry Schwetman and died at her residence in Farmington, Nov. 22 (1966).

Kollmeyer of Farmington; on son, Michael, a student at Westminister Collage, Fulton; her mother, Mrs. Sadie Schwetman, of Fredericktown; two sisters Marie Crane of Fort Smith, Ark. and Virginia Jones of Ala.; two brothers, Willard Schwetman of St. Louis and Bud Schwetman of Scott City.
The body will be in state at Miller Chapel after 2 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Farmington. Interment will be under direction of Miller Funeral Service.
