Article that appeared in Columbus Enquirer on 1/7/1946:
Man Attempts to Console Bride, Family of Friend He Accidentally Killed
Freed Monday, shortly after a corner's jury had held that he had fatally shot Curtis F. Benefield 1705 Fifth Avenue, Phenix City, a friend, accidentally, C. D. Cofield, 21, 8 Roper Avenue, Baker Village, Monday afternoon visited the victim's bride and his family to express regrets and attempt to console them in their grief over the tragedy.
A member of Benefield's family described the scene as Cofield, his wife, mother, father, and brother visited the bereaved family to the dead man.
He was all broken up, and almost crying, as he expressed his regret for the terrible accident they said.
Benefield was shot Sunday afternoon as he and Cofield, both civilian guards at Fort Benning, were engaging in a contest to see which could draw their army automatics, cowboy style, the fastest. Cofield was held at Fort Benning overnight, but was released after a coroner's jury, impaneled by Muscogee County Coroner H. C. Edenfield Monday, held the death to have been accidental.
The jury summoned by Coroner H. C. Edenfiels, found the cause of death to be a hemorrhage caused by a wound from a .45 caliber automatic pistol fired by Mr. Cofield. C. F. Akin was foreman of the jury, other members of which were J. F. Farr, Sam R. Quincy, T. E. Coffield (no relation to C. D. Cofield), A. C. Smith and H. C. Hancock, all of Columbus.
The jury heard the reading of statements made by Mr. Cofield, James A. Seymour, Box 35, Cuseta, an eyewitness to the killing and others and then called Mr. Cofield to ask if he had any further information. Mr. Cofield, half sobbing, said only, "I'm sorry; it was an accident."
Benefield, an Air Force veteran, was born in Phenix City, January 25, 1923, the son of Curtis F. and Bennie Reynolds Benefield. He enlisted in the Army August 19, 1942, serving in the Aslatic-Pacific Theater until he returned to the States in October, 1944, and received his discharge in December of that year. He was a private first class in the 325th Airdrome Sq., AAF.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Miss Della Linton, whom he had married Saturday night, his parents; a sister, two brothers, Ralph Benefield, U. S. Air Force and Joe Benefield, U.S. Navy, grandmother, Mrs. Mary Reynolds, all of Phenix City; four uncles, J. R. Reynolds, Union Springs, Ala.; S. D. Benefield, Roanoke, Ala.; F. L. Benefield and N. H. Benefield, both of Phenix City.
The body is being held at Colonial Funeral home pending funeral arrangements.
