Lorene Kollmeyer, 2002 'Ultimate Pie' winner:
FARMINGTON - For pie lovers, there's a new "Ultimate Pie" they'll want to try. It's the light and delicious Angel Food Pie entered by Lorene "Spanky" Kollmeyer in the Farmington Press/Missouri Natural Gas contest. Mrs. Kollmeyer is a well-known cook in the area and has been delighting family and friends with her homemade baked goods for years. The pie was selected by judges for first place in the frozen/refrigerated category and then walked away with the grand prize "Ultimate Pie" title as well. Mary McEntire took first place in the fruit/nut group with her "Grammy's Apple Pie." In the custard pie category, Nancy Middleton's "Chess Pie" placed first. For the 15 and under cooks, young Halsie Dominck took the blue ribbon with her "Cookie Pie." Other winners in the 15 and under class were Liz Hartman second for her Key Lime Chiffon Pie and Luke Freund third for his Toffee Crunch Cheese Pie. Phyllis Mertel took second in two categories with her entries of Southern Derby Pie and a Lemonade Cheese Pie. The Farmington Press and Missouri Natural Gas Company thank all of those who entered the contest and the judges for their difficult job of making the decisions. Following are the recipes for the first place winners and Ultimate Pie.
Ultimate Angel Food Pie. 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, 1 cup crushed pineapple, drained. 1/8 tsp. salt, 3 Tbs. cornstarch, 4 egg whites. Place sugar, water, pineapple and salt in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir in cornstarch which has been dissolved in a little water and cook until thick, stirring occasionally to keep from lumping. Cool. Add stiff beaten egg whites with a little sugar. Blend into above mixture. Pour into cooled "No-Soggy" pie shell. Top with whipped cream. Refrigerate. The recipe makes two pies. Cut recipe in half for only one pie.

To the family, he was known as "Papa Gentry," but to those who didn't know his name, he was known as "Mr. Wavey, the old man who would wave to everyone," or "that guy who waves all the time." He loved to get up early and see the sun rise as he was walking. These last years he would get up later because of his health & ability to see in the dim light. He would wave at everyone. He would always tell us "If I wave & I can make one person smile -or- make their day brighter by waving, then I have done my job." If you walked by Papa Gentry you would get a "Hi" -or- he would always give little children a "High Five." Papa Gentry was a Christian & as a Christian he felt he should spread the word of God everywhere he went. What better way than through a friendly wave & gentle smile. Saturday, June 15th, at 7:30 am, Papa Gentry was walking along North 'A' Street. He had just stopped & talked to some people & given them his wave. As he left their yard to walk down the street he fell striking his head & died. But, he died doing what pleased him the most. "Making people happy!" Please pass along the wave of love.
Tribute to Gentry Eaves, written by Royce W. Sykes, Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri.
June 19, 2002
AN ELEGY FOR GENTRY tribute from a grandson Gentle wisdom, quiet strength, more often seen than heard though no less your thoughtful words reflected your life of faith and helped to anchor us in our understanding of what God meant by love, to always in Him trust. You, for whom family was far more than kin, meant also confidant and friend shared sorrow and glee. Now we are bereft; the world seems a dimmer place, sadder and smaller, for without you, we feel adrift. Yet, we can still smile to know- despite the tumult of our tears past the darkness of our fears in these days of great sorrow- you walked out of this world into the next, where loved ones and friends who before you moved on wait for you at the gate of pearl, and Ida, with whom the sweetest part of life you shared, reaches for your hand and smiles for you once more while listening with you to words most blest "Well done, Gentry, My servant true and faithful, My beloved child, welcome to your most deserved rest among these your friends and family who, as I, have eagerly awaited you to come." Yes, we left behind may ache with sorrow but also know there will be a tomorrow when we will met you at our Eternal Home.

The below marriages under the name Henty Hogan are recorded in the Hardin County, Illinois Marriage Regester Volume 1, 1884-1891:
First wife: Mrs. Jane Harper
Second wife: Mrs. Jane Goble
Third wife: Melvina Joiner
Fourth wife: Mrs. Amanda Osman
The below obituary was printed in The Hardin County Independent:
Date: January 9, 1930
Henry Hogan died at his home at Hickstown January 25, 1928, he was married four times, to Mrs. Jane Harper, Mrs. Jane Goble, Melvina Joiner and the last time to Mrs. Amanda Osman who preceded him in death. He was at the time of his death 97 years, 3 months and 15 days old. He was laid to rest at Good Hope Cemetery at await the resurrection morning. Written by his great grandchildren.
The below written narrative is strongly believed not to be totally correct according to research documents and records.
Written by: Woodrow Kemmel Hogan.
Date: March 18, 1982
The Hogan family history as outlined in this work started with an Irishman by the name of Henry Hogan. He was born in Ireland on October 11, 1830. He came to the United States about 1846-48. I have done considerable research in trying to locate him in Ireland to learn when he came to this country and what happened to him from that time until he finally settled in deep southern Illinois, around Shawneetown in Gallatin County. Much of his life was spent there and in Elizabethtown in Hardin County. Elizabethtown is some 30 miles due south of Shawneetown - both are located near the Ohio River and Kentucky border, Henry died in Elizabethtown January 26, 1928. His father's name has been lost, but his mother's name was Nancy Pitchford. Nancy died when Henry was about 4 years old. Henry is buried at Good Hope Cemetery near Elizabethtown, Harden County, Illinois. He lived 97 years, 3 months and 18 days.
His death certificate and the U.S. census lists his birthplace as Elizabethtown, but it is know that he was actually born in Ireland. Ivy and Leo, his grandsons, know he was born in Ireland, and I can remember as a child in the early 30's hearing of William L. Hogan, my grandfather, and Clarence Hogan, my father, talked about Henry coming from Ireland to this country. The man who signed the death certificate had known Henry a long time since Henry was 97 years old, there was no one who really knew where he came from at the time of his death. Therefore, in spite of the written record, I am convinced that Henry Hogan did in fact come to the United States from Ireland.
Henry Hogan was said to have had five wives with two of them named Jane, and fathered twenty-one children, but the record ends there.
Research Notes: Several discrepancies exsist in the above narrative.
The narrative written by Woodrow Kemmel Hogan says, "Nancy Pitchford died when her son Henry was about 4 years old." This is most likely incorrect, for the below census record strongly indicate it was Henry's father that died, not the mother. Also, the father must of died when Henry was about 12 years old, and his mother then married William Robbinson.
1850 Federal Census - Hamilton, Illinois
Robbinson William 70 M Laborer from NC
Robbinson Nancy 49 F from SC
Joiner Elizabeth 18 F from MO
Joiner Sarah H. 13 F from MO
Hogan Henry 10 M from IL
Hogan Sarah A. 7 F from Mo.
Additional discrepancies exsist in the narrative written by Woodrow Kemmel Hogan:
1. All except for two original records has Henty Hogan's first name as Henty, not Henry.
2. In contradiction to the above narrative in conjuction with the aforementioned death certificate, - the 1880 Federal Census has the name of Henty Hogan's place of birth as CA. However, I believe Woodrow K. Hogan is correct in stating Henry was born in Ireland.
3. Records in Hardin County, Illinois clearly have Henty Hogan married to four wives by the time of his death, not five. However, he may of been married once before moving there.
Henty "Henry" Hogan is buried at Good Hope Cemetery in Elizabethtowm, Harden County, Illinois.
