Medical Notes: PATTON, W.M.
Born: 18 Nov 1846
Died: 13 Oct 1931
Born on Wolf Creek in Walker Co. AL.
On 1 Dec 1864, he enlisted at Wolf Creek as a private in Company B, Musgrove's Battalion and served until the close of the war.
William Patton was the first pastor for Corinth Baptist Church.
The Daily Mountain Eagle. - September 02, 2005:
Williams, Lona. "Corinth Baptist Church of Cordova will celebrate 100 years"
On Sunday, Sept. 4, at 9:00 a.m., Corinth Baptist Church will have a homecoming service to celebrate their 100 year anniversary. J.B. Thompson, a former pastor, will be the guest speaker at 10:00 a.m., following an hour of praise and worship. Immediately after the preaching service, dinner will be served in the fellowship hall. Everyone is invited to a time of sharing and testimony along with congregational singing and special music in the afternoon.
Branching off Samaria Baptist in 1905, "because the roads were bad and it was too far to ride in wagons and buggies," 18 members chartered the new church at the corner of Buttermilk Road and Gardner's Gin Road to serve the communities of Cordova and Union Chapel. These members were: Celia Kirkpatrick, Daniel Hicks, Mary Hicks, Nettie Hicks, M.A. Leverette, Martha Garner, Manley Rice, Cornelia Rice, James Langley, J.M. Leverette, James Daniel, Tisha Daniel, Monroe Kirkpatrick, George Lockhart, Permelia Lockhart, Joe Sumner, Elizabeth Sumner and Amanda Garner. The land was donated by Pope Long, a large landholder in Walker County.
The first pastor was William Patton. He served the church for 10 years. Not a lot is recorded in the scrapbook or minutes about him. The second pastor, William Thompson, was ordained near Oakman in 1911. Married to the former Minnie Lee Stephenson, Thompson had 10 children and lived in Parrish. He traveled to the church by train or by horse and buggy. L.R. Wilson pastored Corinth church from 1917 until 1922 and again from 1923 - 1925. He was a teacher and bi-vocational pastor. He ordained three other preachers: George Abel, Sam Gardner and Houston Barton. To get to Corinth, Wilson rode a train from Nauvoo to Cordova after changing trains in Parrish.
George Houston Abel pastored the church from 1922 to 1923 but was forced to stop preaching due to ill health. He is the grandfather of Buddy Abel who now serves as chairman of the deacons at Corinth. Sam Gardner succeeded Abel, pastoring until 1930. He was married to Alpha Abel, had seven children and walked from Gardner's Gin Road every Sunday to give his mules a rest on the Sabbath. He was a farmer and felt his team of mules deserved a rest.
There are many other pastors recorded in the church scrapbook. Many of them also have photos.
One of the founding members, John Washington Garner, was honored with a photo and biography in the church scrapbook. He was born in 1856, converted in 1871, and "lived a consecrated life until his death in 1939," according to the writer of the scrapbook captions.
Others did not live such exemplary lives, as excerpts from old minutes of church meetings tell. The church withdrew fellowship from one member for getting drunk and another for gambling. Such disciplinary action was not uncommon in churches of this time period. Some of the offenses might have been dancing, cursing or "disorderly walk," which leaves the offenders unnamed.
The second pastor, William Thompson, would be succeeded 40 years later by his son, Broox Thompson, and 52 years later by his grandson, J.B. Thompson. J.B. Thompson has the longest tenure of any pastor in the history of the church, serving 17 years. He is this pastor who will deliver the homecoming sermon.
There is a long list of pastors who appeared to serve about two to five years each. They are: William Patton, William Thompson, L.R. Wilson, George Houston Abel, L. R. Wilson (a second term), Sam Gardner, B.H. Wakefield, James Monroe Manasco, William Rice, Thomas Price, Charles Frazier, Willie Manasco, Carl Stewart, Willie Timmons, Everette Aaron, Ervin McClendon, Russell Tanner, Thedford Lively, Broox Thompson, Davis Black, Roger Rutledge, Edward Goforth, Carl Banks, Carl Uptain, Eugene Grace, J.B Thompson, Robert (Bunky) Smith, Arnold Hendrix Jr. and Mark Lockhart.
Several ministers were ordained and sent out to pastor other area churches. These were G.R. Shirley, George Abel, Sam Gardner, Houston Burton, Wiley Thompson, Dell Holdbrook, Leroy Kuglar, Glennie Garner, Joe Ivey and Archie Brooks.
A new building was constructed in 1951. In 1960, the church voted to extend the building another 16 to 20 feet toward the rear of the church for Sunday school rooms.
Mrs. Flora Langley was elected pianist in 1945. She served until 1956. The first Bible School was held at the church in 1956 with Glennie Garner as the superintendent.
Also in 1956, under the direction of Thedford Lively, a Training Union and Womens Missionary Union were established.
Somewhere in this time period, the church allowed the miners local to hold meetings at the church with the stipulation that it was "only as long as Marvin Langley was in charge." It follows that Marvin Langley was a member of the miners union and also a trusted member of the church.
In the spring of 1968, five more Sunday School rooms were built, along with bathrooms and storage closets.
The work was rushed to completion in time for a homecoming held on April 20, 1969 with over 150 attending. Some members came from as far away as Michigan and Indiana. The Rev. Ed Goforth was the pastor at that time. Mrs. Lon Cain was recognized as the oldest member at 88 years old. She had joined the church just weeks after it was formed.
A hand written letter in the church scrapbook records that Davis Black, a former pastor, declined an invitation to the 1969 homecoming service. He sent regrets, recalling some members who had meant so much to him as a young pastor: Johnny Hunter, Hugh Abel and Grady Terry. He requested a song from the Baptist Hymnal be sung as a tribute to these men who had passed on. The song was "There is a Land that is Fairer than Day."
It is amusing to read notations about money given to foriegn missions for the year 1906. For the entire year, $1.60 was collected.
Salaries for the pastors were recorded in the minutes. The time period these collections represent was unclear, whether for one month or one quarter. In 1942, the amount collected for the pastor was $5.40; in 1943, $6.52; and in November of 1944, $11.40. Based on the following story and the years listed, it would appear that these collections were made monthly or quarterly.
An older gentleman I met recently, who, as a child, had known my own grandfather, Sam Gardner, recalled his response to a question from a fellow preacher about what kind of year he'd had financially. My grandfather told him he'd had a great year! He had received "$18, a new suit of clothes and two poundings. "(A pounding was similar to a fooddrive, given to the pastor and his family.) He was the pastor of Corinth Baptist from 1925 - 1930, according to the church records.
Old photos and records will be available to all those who have an interest following the morning service on September 4. Please call the church office at 483-9534 if you have any questions, historical information or photos to share.
