They became members of the Braham Lutheran Church.
Both Christina and her husband were active in church and community affairs wherever they lived. Last Rites Held for B.T. Swenson - Pioneer and Community Builder Served His Territory with Credit; Active in Matters of the Church And State; Passed Away At Age of Seventy-nine:
The last rites for another pioneer of our community were held last Saturday afternoon when the remains of Mr. B.T. Swenson were laid to rest. Funeral services were first held at the home at one o'clock and later from the Braham Lutheran Church at two o'clock. Rev. Aug. P. Lawrence assisted by Rev. C.S. Renius, a former Braham pastor, officiated. Interment was made in the family lot at the Rice Lake Lutheran Cemetery.
Bror Theodor Swenson was born at Lånamåla, Kalmar län, Sweden, on Feb. 23, 1847. He came to America in 1870, locating first at Stillwater, Minnesota. In the spring of 1876 he came to the Town of Nessel, Chisago County and it was there he first made his home with his brother Charley. On November 27th, 1882 he was united in marriage with Ingrid Johnson of Lindstrom, Minnesota, the ceremony was performed at Hudson, Wisconsin. They settled immediately on their homestead in Nessel Township and became one of the early pioneer families of the community. And there they have built up in the course of time a fine and very happy home.
Mr. Swenson was active in the affairs of the community. He was one of the organizers of the Nessel Mutual Fire Insurance Company and became its first president. He served that capacity from 1888 to 1904 and as vice-president from 1912 to 1925. He also served as Country Commissioner for his district for 8 years and on the town board for sixteen years. He was one of the organizers of the Braham Cooperative Creamery Association and served as its first president from 1912 to 1918.
Mr. Swenson did not permit these interests alone to absorb all his time nor to usurp the first place in his heart. He was above all active in the work of the church. He became a charter member of the Rush Lake congregation and served that church faithfully for a number of years as trustee and deacon respectively. In 1902 the family transferred their membership to the Rice Lake Lutheran Congregation. Mr. Swenson was here immediately elected as trustee of that church. Two years later he was elected deacon. Resigning then as trustee he served his church as a deacon for nine years. He also served the church in other capacities and was faithful to the trust wherever he was placed.
Of late years, Mr. Swenson has been in failing health; especially so the past two years. The last four weeks he was confined to his bed. He passed away at his home very peacefully a week ago Sunday evening at half past five o'clock. His life had been characterized by an atmosphere of peace and so were also his last moments. He died confessing his unwavering trust in the Savior who had been his constant companion in life. He had at his death attained the age of 79 years, 3 months and 27 days.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Mrs. Ingrid Swenson, one son, Albin, and four daughters: Ida, Zelma, Teckla and Mrs. A.L. Hinden; the latter of Spring Vale, and the other four children being all home. He is also mourned by one grandchild, Iris Hilden; by many other relatives and a host of friends.
Messers. Fred Johnson, Herman Hallstrom, Elis Carlson, A.J. Wistrom, John Dahl and H.O. Bong acted as pallbearers. Services were largely attended and many came from a far as follows: from St. Paul: Mrs. N. Swanson, Mrs. Lewis Swanson, Miss Hanna Nord, Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson and Mr. Woodrow Johnson; from Minneapolis: Mr. R.R. and B.B. Borman, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Dahl, Rev. and Mrs. C.S. Renius; from Abercrombie: Mr. and Mrs. M.M. Borman and daughter Viola; from Lindstrom: Mr. Gust Fernlund, Mrs. Amanda Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Swen Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Gust Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Johnson; from Center City Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Johnson and daughter Ruth, from Randolph: Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Nelson and sons, Charles, Frederic and George; from Rush City: Mrs. J.F. Anderson, Miss Jennie Westlund, Mrs. A. Rundskog; from Cambridge: Mr. and Mrs. Claus Johnson and Miss Amelia Soderman; from Wyanette: Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hilden and son, Rodger, and Mr. L.C. Larson.
CARD OF APPRECIATION
We wish to most sincerely express our thanks to friends and relatives for their kindness and sympathy extended to us during our late bereavement. Especially do we wish to thank Rev. Lawrence and Rev. Renius for their comforting messages at the services, those who sang, the pallbearers and all others who assisted and contributed to the many beautiful flowers.

Research notes for John Key:
JOHN KEY was born 1776 in either Amherst or Louisa County, Virginia, based on census records. He was the son of Martin Key Jr. and his wife Ann Rice. By 1782, John's father, MARTIN KEY, began appearing on the Amherst County Tax Lists and his family is listed there every year through 1799. In 1795, JOHN KEY received the deed for property located on Enchanted Creek in Amherst Co., Va. that belonged to his brother, RICE KEY. John may have farmed this land as a tenant until a 60 acre tract on Brown's Creek (branch of the Pedlar River) was surveyed in his name on 13 June 1797. He may have lived there until the property was sold by his brother Rice Key in 1801.
John married Belinda MILSTEAD on 15 July 1797 in Amherst Co., Va. John's father MARTIN KEY, was apparently required to give his consent for John to marry BELINDA MILSTEAD so John had to have been under the age of 21 years in 1797. Based on his marriage and census records, John Key's birth date must have been between 16 July and 28 November 1776. Belinda Milstead, born 1777 in Amherst County, Va. was the daughter of JOSEPH MILSTEAD JR. and his wife ELIZABETH SHRADER of Amherst County, Va. After marriage, John and Belinda acquired more land along Brown's, Lovelady, Horsley Creeks and later along the Pedlar River. John appeared on the Amherst Co., Va. Tax List as early as 1799. In 1799, MARTIN KEY's name was marked through and that of JOHN KEY inserted.
In September 1801, John and Belinda bought 100 acres along the south branches of the Horsley River on Bankston's Mountain. The couple owned this property for a short time before selling it to Thomas Morris in December 1802. It was at some point after the sale of this land that John Key moved down to Surry County, North Carolina although he appears to have owned property in Amherst County, Virginia as late as 1807. Land records show that John began purchasing property in Surry Co., NC on 1 March 1806. JOHN and BELINDA KEY owned property in the Pedlar River area until at least 1807 when John was named in a deed as owning property adjacent to a tract that was being sold there. According to tax lists, John later accumulated over 600 acres but deed records are apparently incomplete in Surry County as his later land buying/selling activity is not fully documented.
From 1806 until 1814, JOHN KEY appeared on several Surry Co., NC records. He served on juries in Nov. 1810, Feb. 1811, Feb. 1813 and May 1813. He served as Constable in Feb. 1811, Feb. 1812, Feb. 1813, Feb. 1814, Mar. 1814 and May 1814. He also appeared on a Surry Co. "Overseers of Road" record in May 1810 but was replaced in that capacity in November 1814 by which time he had apparently moved on to Iredell Co., NC.
In Surry County, North Carolina, John lived in the vicinity of his brothers, Rice and William Key. He was enumerated on the 1810 Federal Census in Surry County and appeared on the Surry County Tax List for 1812 with 570 acres. John's family appeared on the 1810 Surry Co., NC Federal Census. John would have been about 34 and Belinda would have been about 33 at the time of this census. The older couple listed in their household may have been John's parents (MARTIN and ANN RICE KEY) since Belinda's parents (JOSEPH and ELIZABETH MILSTEAD) were already deceased by this time. Several references cite JOHN and BELINDA KEY being the parents of eleven children but only ten are known.
John and Belinda's next move was to Iredell Co., NC, where they first obtained 329 acres on Third Creek adjoining William McKnight in 1814 and additional land after that date. Very little is known about JOHN and BELINDA KEY's time spent in Iredell Co., NC or their migration into Mississippi territory which contained all of present-day Alabama with most of it still Indian lands at the time.
The move to Alabama appears to have taken place after Christmas, 1819. The route PROBABLY took the KEY family across the Blue Ridge Mountains into Tennessee and then along the Tennessee River Valley into Northeast Alabama. Whatever the route, the KEY family was in Alabama by 1820 where John was enumerated in St. Clair Co. on the state census. John was apparently active (or moved through) the Cullman, St. Clair and Winston counties area before homesteading a tract of land in Walker County in 1824. His first authentic record is a government land entry of 80 acres made in Section 10, Township 15, Range 8, on Christmas Day December 25, 1824 at the land office in Tuscaloosa. This entry was on Lost Creek, north of Oakman and south of Jasper. The property was located along Wolf Creek a little over halfway between Jasper and Oakman. Today, State Highway 69 cuts through the northern part of this tract and Morris Cemetery is located on the southwest corner of the tract. This 80 acre farm was probably where the JOHN KEY family was living when enumerated on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 federal censuses. He was one of the pioneers of the Methodist Church in Walker County, and the earliest record of that church in the county is a report of a quarterly conference held at his home on Lost Creek on June 14, 1833.
JOHN KEY resided in Walker County, Alabama until his death after ca 1860. Other than the reference to an 1834 Blount Circuit Meeting of the Methodist Church held at his home, no records other than the federal census tells us about his life there. Several fires in the Walker Co., courthouse have resulted in the complete destruction of all land, marriage and court records prior to the 1870's. If these records survived, the story of the Walker Co., KEY family would be much more complete.
According to family tradition, JOHN KEY died in 1861. This date is not documented though as John has not been found on the 1860 census and appears on no surviving records after 1850. Most researchers believe that John was visiting relatives near Sipsey in eastern Walker Co. when he became ill, died, and was buried at Drummond Cemetery overlooking the Sipsey River. If this is the site of his burial, the grave is unmarked. Belinda Milstead Key died about 1860 in Walker Co., Ala and is thought to also be buried in an unmarked grave in Drummond Cemetery, Sipsey, Alabama.
John & Belinda Milstead Key were the parents of eleven children and the oldest was William S. Washington Key, who was born 8 Jan 1801 in Amherst Co., Virginia and came to Walker County, Ala. with his parents, where he was reared. He married about 1819 to Cynthia Ascenith Abbott, born 8 Mar 1803 in North Carolina, the daughter of James Abbott and Elizabeth Copeland. William W. Key was a farmer all of his life, and died 9 Jun 1879 near Manchester, Alabama and is buried in the Old Shiloh Cemetery on Nauvoo Road. Cynthia, his wife, died 6 Mar 1884 and is also buried in the Old Shiloh Cemetery on Nauvoo Road in Walker Co., AL..
Their children were --- James Key; John Key; William Key, who moved to Cherokee County, Texas; BELINDA MILSTEAD KEY who married JOHN RANDOLPH CHEEK, Nancy Key who is thought to have married a Washington Cheek; Howell Key; and Elizabeth G. Key who married William Riley Snow. The William Riley Snow family lived next door to the Cheek family in Cherokee Co., Texas.
