Application to the Eastern Cherokee #14341 for William A. Holcomb
The names of Hiram Berry and Sarah Shook are from this file. William claims through both his mother Louisa (Berry) Holcomb and his father William Jackson Holcomb. William states that his grandmother Sarah Shook was a full-blood Cherokee. He states that his father William Jackson Holcomb was one-fourth, and his grandmother Sarah Nicholson (one-half) through her father Isaac Nicholson (full-blood).
Additional Information: This application seems to support the family tradition that Martha Malinda Berry Nicholson was one-half Dutch and one-half Cherokee. However, there are land records that indicate that Sarah Berry was probably not a full-blood Cherokee.

Personen : Goad Elizabeth
Application to the Eastern Cherokee #10622 for Elizabeth Watts:
The name Lucretia Dover comes from this file. Elizabeth stated that her mother was Eliza Jane Nicholson and her father Hiram Goad. Elizabeth further states that her grandfather was named Isaac Nicholson (one-half blood) and grandmother was Lucretia Dover. She claims that her great-grandfather (not named) was a full-blood Cherokee. [Other records including deed records and census records indicate that Elizabeth's grandfather was mostly likely named James Nicholson, not Isaac.
Additional Information: As proven daughter, Elizabeth was born in 1798. This brings up the question of Elizabeth Watts's grandmother being Lucretia Dover. The Lucretia on the 1850 census was born about 1795, so probably wasn't Eliza Jane Nicholson Goad's mother. Maybe she was her step-mother.

Overman roots have been traced through Dempsey, who was born inRandolph
Co., NC in 1783. Dempsey's father, Zebulon was born in 1756 inGreenbrier Co
now in WV. Zebulon's father, Isaac, was born in 1727, prob inPasquotank Co.
NC. Isaac's father, Ephriam, was born in 1681 prob. in what is nowPasquotan
Co., NC. Oral history of the Overman family tells of four Overmanbrothers
leaving Prussia. One stayed in the West Indies; three came to theAmerican
colonies.
The earliest religious dissenters in VA were Quakers. Quakersettlements
were numerous on the eastern shore and in and around Nansemond Co -but many
began to leave at an early date. Those from the eastern shore wentinto MD,
and those from the Nansemond Co area went into the Albemarle areaof NC. The
became tolerated by custom and in 1692 they obtained legaltoleration.

p. 2. "Overman Family Data" contributed by Patricia B Gibbs, 104 SlyRun,
Noblesville, IN 46060:
There seem to be various stories about the origin of the Overmanfamily in
America. Tradition has it that the Overman family in Americaoriginated from
two brothers who came from Germany and it has always been a puzzleto their
posterity to know whether they belong to this branch of or theother. The
original name was spelled "Obermann". Quoted from "A TWIG OF THEOVERMAN
FAMILY" compiled by B F Overman, a great-grandson of Ephraim andRachel
(Small) Overman, in 1918.
According to Miss Alwida Overman, now retired and living in theFriends
Fellowship Community, Richmond, IN, the family had its origin fromJacob
Weberman who was born in Saxony, Germany about 1652. William Penn,on one of
his trips to the Continent is supposed to have interested Jacob inthe
Society of Friends and influenced him into coming to America. Jacobcame to
in 1672 and shortly afterward changed his name to Overman. It wouldseem tha
he would probably go to what is now Pennsylvania, but if he did, wehave no
record of it. On 1677-10-25 he married Hannah (last name unknow) in
Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut, where they had nine children.Hannan
died 1692-02-22, two days after the last child, Hope, was born.
Jacob married second, Dorothy Porter, dau of Thomas and Sarha(Hart) Porter
of Hartford and Farmington, CT. (Source: FAMILIES OF EARLYHARTFORD, CT, by
Lucius Barnes Barbour, p. 460). There were no children by thesecond
marriage.
On 1694-02-25 Jacob was granted 400 acres of land due him as animmigrant
settler in Pasquotank Co., NC. Jacob's will was dated 1715 Sep 12.I have a
copy of it from the NC Archives, Vol. XXIII, p. 27. His will namewife
Dorothy; son Ephraim; daughter Margary Macky; son Charles and thechildren o
Jacob, deceased.

Ephraim Overman was born 1681/2-March-09 Wethersfield, CT(Wethersfield
V.R., Vol. LR 1:4), the 3rd of the 9 children of Jacob and HannahOverman.
Hannah died in childbirth 1692-Feb-22, age 38, at Wethersfield orHartford.
