The below article was published in 1979 in the Grapevine Area History and was written by Weldon Green Cannon, great grandson of Wiley Green Cannon and wife, Sofronia Strong (Haley) Cannon. Weldon Green Cannon is or was (in 1982) a Professor of History at Temple Junior College, Temple Texas. Weldon Green Cannon is a son of Ruben Ross Cannon & Winnie Lee Day and a grandson of Archibald Newman Cannon and Sarah Idella Whitener:
WILEY GREEN CANNON
About 1873 Wiley Green Cannon and his wife, Sofronia Strong (Haley) Cannon, with five children, moved from Bedford County, Tennessee to Bedford, Texas. They followed a much used migration trail that was traveled by many other Tennesseans, such as the Allen, Bobo, and Euless families. "Green" and "Fronie" Cannon, as they were called by their family and friends, were born on November 16, 1842, and November 19, 1844 respectively, both in Bedford County and were married there on September 30. 1865. The five children born in Bedford County were: (1) Archibald Newman (1866-1941) who married Sarah Idella Whitener in 1891 and had seven children; (2) John Marion (1867-1920) who married Mary Elizabeth Cox in 1887, seven children; (3) Thomas Riley (1869-1948) who married Pierie Edna Evett in 1890, five children; (4) Deniel Preston (1870-1929) who married Irene Isabell Rogers in 1892, three children and Lela Burks in 1903, three children; (5) William Green (1872-1952) who married Lillian James Joban in 1894, four children. At Bedford, Texas, five more children were born to the Cannons: (6) Walter E. (1875-1944) who married Lula L. Honneycutt in 1909 and had four children; (7) Mary M. (1877-1881); (8) Annie Belle (1880-1957) who married William Rufus Allen in 1900, three children; (9) Adam Euless (1884-1954) who married Dona Lillian Souder in 1904, six children; (10) Fannie Kate (1885-1974) who married Andy Waggoner Felps in 1902, two children.
By WELDON GREEN CANNON:
Many of the forty-four grandchildren of Green and Fronie Cannon are still living. Numerous descendants are scattered over much of Texas and Oklahoma, and as far away as California. They are still concentrated, however, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area mainly in Bedford and surrounding towns. Green Cannon's father was Almon Cannon (1812 Georgia - 1896, Tennessee). Fronie Cannon's parents were Edward Taylor Haley, Jr. (1819, Tennessee - 1894, Texas) and Mary Ann (Coats) Haley (1822, Virginia - 1886, Texas) who also moved to Tarrant County, Texas and are buried in Bear Creek Cemetery in Euless. Her grandfather, Edward Taylor Haley, Sr. served in the War of 1812 in the 2nd Regiment West Tennessee Militia. Her great grandfather, James Haley, was in the American Revolution in the Virginia State Militia. Green Cannon served in the Confederate Army in the 37th Regiment Tennessee Infantry. In 1880 Green Cannon purchased a 250 acre farm about one mile northwest of Bedford from the Allen family who had moved from Tennessee even before the Civil War. The Cannon family lived in a large sturdy log cabin that had been built by the Allens. In the sandy land the Cannons grew cotton and corn, fruit and blackberries. The house faced south on Harwood Road at its junction with Oak Grove Road. Much traffic between Fort Worth and Grapevine or Dallas or other places passed in front of the house. There thirsty travelers often stopped to refresh themselves at a well of very fine water in the front yard. In 1886 the Cannons sold two acres from their farm as a site for the Oak Grove Methodist Church. Green Cannon died at Bedford on January 1, 1903. Fronie Cannon continued to live there until the farm was sold in 1917. She died on March 17, 1922, at the home of her son, Arch, at Euless. The Cannons were members of the Bedford Church of Christ and are buried in the Bedford Cemetery.

The below information is provided by Douglas L. Foster:
It's not known that she is a sister of Almon and Elijah. I tend to believe that she is their sister based on the 1850 Bedford County, Tennessee census. In that census the record shows the following:
1850 Census of Bedford County, Tennessee, Civil District No. 23, enumerated 12 October 1850. Dwelling 66, Family 66, Lines 28-35.
Almon Cannon 37 M Tenant Georgia

Dwelling 67, Family 67, Lines 36-39
Margaret Cannon 36 F Georgia
Mary Cannon 9 F TN
Martha Cannon 7 F TN
Robert Cannon 4 M TN
Since both Almon and Margaret are only a year apart in age and both were born in Georgia according to this census and since they were living in houses that were in close proximity I think that it is natural to think that they are brother and sister. Another possibility would be sister-in-law and Margaret is a widow of Almon's brother.
The 1860 census shows Margaret as living in District No. 3 of Bedford County. This record shows the following:

Note: In this census Dwelling No. 341, Family No. 341 was the family of Dr. Rufus A. Coldwell and wife Mary C. Moore. Mary C. Moore was an older sister of my great grandfather, John Fletcher Moore. Their home is known as Moore's Ford Farm and is located three miles east of Shelbyville. The place is named for the ford in the river behind the house that for many years was one of the chief places for crossing Duck River above Shelbyville. The resident of Almon Cannon in District 23 was just across the river.

My best guess is that the first three individuals in this record are children of Hannah Cannon and that Mary J and Francis are children of the older Mary of Eliza.
Question: Is the above Eliza Cannon the same person as Eliza Jane Cannon, first wife of John Willis Branch?

Number: of children: 12
Number of marriages: 1
Occupation: Homemaker
Listed in the 1850 Lincoln County, TN census as age 31 and born in North Carolina.
Listed in the 1880 Lincoln County, TN census, District 20, as head of household. In this census she was listed as age 62, keeping house and born in NC. Living with her were sons: W. L. Cannon, age 39 and born in Tennessee and J. M. A. Cannon, age 24. born in Tennessee, and Elizabeth Cannon, wife of one of the two sons, age 26, born in Tennessee.
Family legend is that she was a Cherokee girl who was taken in and raised as a member of the Lacy family in Bedford County, Tennessee.
The below was written by Mary Alice Holder:
Her name was Dias Harriett Lacy, and was also called "Dicy" and "Mudgie". She was an Indian born in 1819, North Carolina. "Mudgie" in Indian language means "Caring Giver".
Not named Hiawatha - . found out that was not her name, that came from the family verbally but proved by the Indians that Hiawatha could not be a part of her name, Dias Harriet Lacey is her name, or Lacy. I was told that you had Elijah Lacey as her father. I have not been able to prove anything about her father or mother. I was told that her grandfather lived in North Carolina. Elizabeth was the wife of William Loaton Cannon, and Lydia Hanna. Also to add to the confusion, there was another Dicy Cannon. She could have been a daughter of Dias. This is not proven yet. Or not to my knowledge.
Was told but have not found yet, She is buried at a church going toward Bedford up on a hill.

YOUNG FARMER DIES.
HENRY W. TATUM VICTIM OF PNEUMONIA.
"Henry W. Tatum, a young farmer living 3 miles east of Arlington died at his home Saturday afternoon, of pneumonia. Interment was made in the Arlington cemetery Monday afternoon. The deceased is survived by a wife and 4 little daughters. At the time of his death, Mr. Tatum was 35 years of age.
Nearly everybody in this section knew Henry Tatum, as he had lived in this community for the past 15 or 20 years. He was known as a hard working, and honest man, a good neighbor, and an exemplary husband and father. By pure industry, he managed to accumulate considerable property, though he started with nothing more than a courageous and industrious spirit.
Business men of Arlington, with whom he had been dealing for many years, testify to his splendid integrity."
