STATE OF TENNESSEE v. SONYA MICHELLE GOSNELL and BRONZO GOSNELL, JR.
Court:TCCA
Attorneys:
Greg W. Eichelman, District Public Defender; Michael A. Walcher,
Assistant District Public Defender, Greeneville, Tennessee, for the
appellant, Sonya Michelle Gosnell.
William Louis Ricker, Greeneville, Tennessee, for the appellant,
Bronzo Gosnell, Jr.
Paul G. Summers, Attorney General and Reporter; Russell S. Baldwin,
Assistant Attorney General; C. Berkeley Bell, District Attorney
General; and Cecil C. Mills, Assistant District Attorney General, for
the appellee, State of Tennessee.
Judge: RILEY
First Paragraph:
A jury convicted both defendants of second degree murder. Bronzo
Gosnell and Sonya Gosnell were sentenced to 25 years and 20 years,
respectively. In this appeal as a matter of right, both defendants
challenge the introduction of recorded conversations made while
detained in a police cruiser. Sonya Gosnell further challenges the
introduction of certain pretrial statements, the administration of a
polygraph examination, the denial of her motion for severance, and the
denial of expert assistance. Bronzo Gosnell further challenges the
trial court's limitation of his cross-examination of a witness and his
maximum sentence of 25 years. Our review of the issues presented by
the defendants reflects no reversible error. Accordingly, we affirm
the judgments of the trial court.

Personen : Stephens Charley Wesley (Sr.)
In 2007, Carolyn Jean (Daniel) League [granddaughter of Charley Wesley (Sr.) and Flossie Dimple (Duke) Stephens] wrote:
Charley Wesley (Sr.) Stephens told later in life how it had been very difficult as a child. He said kids picked fights with him calling him a "breed" and a "halfbreed". His skin coloring was light with red hair unlike his siblings who had dark skin and hair. He took his skin coloring after his father. He said all the kids knew who his family was and they were from the reservation. Talking about his family was not something he did often. He always wished he could have found his "baby sister" after he grew up. All the children were split up after their mother died and were raised by different families. Much of his growing up was spent with a German family that took him in. He became fluent in the German language. He grew up knowing all his siblings except the baby.
He was a very quiet man that seemed not to like people. Yet, if he was with only one person he was quite friendly. Most that knew him considered him a grumpy person. But he was always ready to help anyone who needed help and seemed to live just for that. He would drive up and down alleys everyday looking for whatever other people threw out that was still good. Then he would look for someone who needed what he had found. People in the town where he lived were accustomed to seeing him in his old blue station wagon loaded down with the treasures he had found. Most children that knew him always had bicycles that he had put together with pieces he collected. He also supplied lawn mowers to families that needed one. Many times he appeared in the yard of someone who needed their lawn mowed. At six in the morning he would be out there mowing the lawn and then get in his car and drive off.
During his life he had not been a religious person even though his wife was very religious. The last few years of his life he started going to a Penticostal church (on North Hwy. 59 in Merced, CA) and was there everyday working on whatever needed repaired. He built new pews for the church after he started going there.
Most of his working years were spent at Teco in Madera, CA, as a welder for farm, ranch and auction equipment. That is where he retired from. Earlier work had been in gold mines, lumber mills, chopping trees in the forest and whatever else he could do to make a living for his family. His wife Flossie worked right along side of him when he worked chopping trees and cutting lumber.
