page: 594
residence: Deer Creek Twp
John Batschelet, a successful and leading young farmer of Deer Creek township,
Henry County, is following in the footsteps of his ancestors, who were tillers of
the soil. They were among the early pioneer settlers of the township and John
Batschelet is a native son of Henry County. He was born in Davis township, Henry
County, November 13, 1870, a son of Frederick Batschelet, further mention of
whom is made elsewhere in this volume. John Batschelet was reared on a farm
and received his education in the Willow Branch district school. He then engaged
in farming as his vocation. In 1912 he purchased 200 acres in Deer Creek
township and has made his home upon it since. He carries on general farming and
stock raising and has a well improved and valuable farm which bears testimony
to his thrift and industry. In 1911 Mr. Batschelet was married to Mary Neil, a
daughter of Alex Neil of La Due, Missouri. She was born on a farm near La Due,
Missouri, in 1882. One child, John K., has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Batschelet. Mr.
Batschelet is a stockholder in the Farmers Elevator of Clinton, Missouri, and he
is one of Henry County's progressive, public spirited and substantial citizens. The
success that he has attained is due to hard work and close attention to business.

Personen : Westover John "Glen" Glendower
Dr. John Westover earned a doctorate in history at the University of Missouri and has taught at universities in the United States and abroad. He is co-founder of the Hemlock Society of Southern Arizona, and has been a member of Hemlock USA since 1981. He served as the organization's president for the second time, having also held that office from 1990-1992.
Dr. John Westover was the featured speaker at Missouri Army National Guard, Artillery regiment meeting:
Missouri's only active regiment under the U.S. Army's Combat Arms Regimental System met recently in Mexico, Mo.
The 128th Field Artillery Regiment, an established CARS regiment since 1959, conducted its annual Regimental Day at the Kenneth L. Bradford National Guard Armory in Mexico. Former Regimental members living in Wisconsin, Illinois, Arizona, and Missouri attended, as well as active members of the 1st Battalion, 128th Field Artillery.
Dr. John Glendower Westover, a member of the regiment before and after World War II, was the primary speaker. Westover shared his experiences during armory training and at annual field training conducted at Fort Riley. Lying under a tree "observing camouflage" and a "sixteen-day checker game using Coke and orange soda bottle caps" were among his vivid memories.
Westover spoke about electing, during his first drill in 1936, a new officer for promotion to second lieutenant, and he recalled the lack of artillery skills among some of the battery officers. Training assembly pay, or "drill pay" as it was called before the war, totaled $1 per Monday evening drill.
Obviously, the National Guard of the pre-World War 11 years was much different than it is today.Westover, who retired as a major following 20 years service that included World War II, received an official U.S. Army "Distinguished Member of the Regiment" award from Honorary Col. Jim Westcott.
At one time in its history the 128th Field Artillery Regiment consisted of three battalions. The 3rd Battalion, 128th Field Artillery was a Nike air defense battalion located in the Kansas City area from 1960 to 1968. During this same time period, the 1st and 2nd Battalions were "composite battalions" utilizing self-propelled artillery pieces consisting of both 105mm and 155mm guns.
The 128th Field Artillery Regiment traces its history back to the War of 1812 when the St. Louis Volunteer Artillery, under Capt. Charles Lucas, defended the Village of St. Louis against British and Indian attacks.
