Personen : Reich Derek
July 19, 2007 - Citizens Voice, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania:
Wilkes-Barre man wanted on warrant turns himself in after five-hour chase.
Sitting on a porch with Corey Daniel Burns in Plymouth on Tuesday night, Derek Reich had a "bad feeling," according to arrest papers.
He was right.
An hour later, Reich surrendered peacefully to police in a property adjacent to the Plymouth home on Church Street. For nearly five hours, Reich had evaded capture from three Luzerne County deputy sheriffs looking for him after he failed to appear in court for a May 10 sentencing for aggravated assault, according to arrest papers.
Acting on a tip, the three deputies attempted to arrest Reich on Tuesday at his home in the 100 block of Westminster Street in Wilkes-Barre. Shortly after the deputies knocked on the door about 3:30 p.m., Reich, 19, kicked out a window in the rear of the property and fled authorities on foot, police said.
The chase took authorities through Wilkes-Barre and Hanover Township. On one occasion, police lost Reich in an alley behind Horton Street in Wilkes-Barre and a second time when Reich fled to a wooded area behind Saint Mary's Monument Shop in Hanover Township, according to arrest papers.
Police charged Reich with two felonies - default in required appearances and flight to avoid apprehension, trial or punishment - and three misdemeanors, according to arrest papers. Reich was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge William Amesbury of Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
Police also charged the 18-year-old Burns, of River Street in Wilkes-Barre, with two felony counts of hindering apprehension or prosecution because he was with Reich during the chase but didn't notify authorities. Police also charged Burns with obstructing administration of justice, a misdemeanor, according to arrest papers.
Burns was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Donald Whittaker of Nanticoke on Wednesday.
After evading police, Reich went to a friend's house on Church Street in Plymouth, where Burns later met him, police said. The two sat on the porch until Reich told Burns he had a "bad feeling." Reich then took Burns' cell phone and left the home, police said.
When police arrived at the Church Street residence, they saw Burns still sitting on the porch and asked him if knew Reich's location.
"No, I didn't see him at all," Burns told authorities, according to arrest papers. Shortly after, Reich was arrested.
Reich and Burns were taken to Luzerne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, and remained there Wednesday. Both have preliminary hearings set for 11 a.m. July 26.
