PENNER, FRED, JR. 1920-2002
Funeral services for Fred Penner, Jr., 82, was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at the Mennonite Brethren Church. The Pastor Gary Janzen officiated. Burial followed in the Cedar Cemetery under the direction of the Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.
Fred Penner, Jr. was born on January 11, 1920, during a severe snowstorm, one mile northeast of Isabella, Oklahoma, in the home of his parents Fred and Anna (Eck) Penner.
He received his education in the Isabella Grade School, finishing the 7th grade. He then had to take over farming the family farm. However, he loved to read and continued to educate himself. In 1942, Fred entered the Civilian Public Service. He immensely enjoyed the time he spent serving his Lord and country in that manner. He was stationed in Dennison, Iowa and later was transferred to Three Rivers, California where he worked along side a park ranger in the Sequoia National Park. Fred enjoyed telling the retelling the many interesting experiences he had during those years of service. In the spring of April 1946, the war was finally over and Fred returned home ready to start a new life. On May 19th, 1946, he married Elizabeth Nichols of Fairview, Oklahoma in the Church of God in Christ Mennonite at Fairview, Oklahoma. Minister George Nichols officiated. They started their life together on the same place Fred was born. He built a brand new five-room home just up on the hill west of the house he was born in. To this union one daughter, Lavada Marie; and one son, Fred Adam were born. Fred taught Sunday School and served as an usher in the church for many years. He served on the Isabella School Board for six years. He farmed and ran a dairy until 1972, when he retired from the dairy and helped his son-in-law get established taking over the dairy. On June 9th, 2002, he peacefully departed his life at the Okeene Hospital. His family will miss Fred's wonderful sense of humor, the light in his eyes and the smile on his face when he would see them coming. But they know he's waiting for them to join him in that Heavenly country.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his beloved wife, Elizabeth; one daughter and her husband, Lavada and David Koehn of Fairview, Oklahoma; five grandchildren; two sisters, Francis Boehs of Montezuma, Kansas and Elsie Nightingale and her husband Harlan of Fairview, Oklahoma; one brother, John Penner and his wife Ida of Moundridge, Kansas; two brother-in-laws; and many nieces and nephews and friends. Those preceding him in death are his parents, son Fred Adam Penner, two brothers and four sisters.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Okeene Hospital or the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church Missions. As printed in "the OKEENE RECORD", Thursday, June 13th, 2002, Okeene, Blaine County, Oklahoma, 73763, U.S.A.

From the history of the Wildey Theatre, Edwardsville, Illinois:
During my high school years, rather during my junior and senior years after I turned 16, I worked at the Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville. This would be 1944-1945. I worked at the candy and popcorn stand, which was in the lobby of the theatre. I remember I had to wear a white pinafore apron while on duty. I also worked in the ticket booth, which was a small booth located in the front of the theatre. It was very small and could only hold one person comfortably. The manager at the time I worked there was Stuart Gavett.
Also working there were a few of my classmates - Leo Levora, Andy Nelson, and Marvin Winte. They were ushers and had to wear white shirts, ties, and dark trousers. They always carried a flashlight so that they could seat people and also walk up and down the aisles every now and then to make sure everything was okay. One of them was also stationed at the door to collect tickets. They would tear the ticket in half, giving half to the customer and putting the other half in the large container. They also had to change the marquee in the front of the building every time the picture changed. Movies changed three times a week. One picture would run Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday with a continuous showing starting at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. On Wednesday, they would run a double feature, usually B-type movies. They would run the next movie on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. A cartoon and the news were usually run prior to the main attraction.
Another friend also worked in the ticket booth, Esther Bettman Meyer. She was the permanent cashier and worked at the Wildey for quite a long time. I was more or less her substitute in the ticket booth. Sometimes the line to buy tickets would stretch all the way down to the Tri-City Grocery, which is now known as Laurie's Place. At the end of selling tickets, which was 9:00 p.m., John Huse, a police Officer, would come and escort the cashier into the building as she always had quite a bit of money from ticket sales.
When it was a sellout, the people would have to wait in the lobby until seats were available for the next movie. There were two projectionists, Andy Foehrkalb, and for the life of me, I cannot remember the other man's name. I remember the large curtain that was used on the stage. If I remember correctly, it was heavy maroon velvet decorated with gold, which they would open before the movie and close at the end of the night.
A man by the name of Frank Carter was the all-around handyman. He kept the theatre very clean. There was a drinking fountain on the corner in front of the theatre and he kept that fountain sparkling clean and shiny.
My job, naturally, was to sell candy, gum, and popcorn. Sometimes we would have a contest to see who could fold the popcorn boxes the fastest. When we got real busy, someone would help fold boxes to keep ahead of the crowd. Popcorn was 25 cents a box. Candy bars and gum were 5 cents. This was during the war and people would ask for Hershey bars, which we could not get. We had a candy bar which was similar, called Nestles, which has now become a household name. I had to go in on Saturday mornings and clean the candy case and popcorn machine, which was never a fun job. I really enjoyed working at the theatre. It provided me with spending money, plus.

Obituary - Unknown newspaper/date:
Died March 29, 1936
Aged Aviston Man Dies There Early Sunday Afternoon
It was indeed a very sad Sunday afternoon at the Welling home in Aviston, last Sunday, when the aged father, Bernard H. Welling, passed away, at 1:30 pm. He was well prepared, having received the last sacraments Saturday afternoon. Shortly before his demise, it was noted that death was near. Father Lohman was called at 12:45 pm and the last blessing was bestowed upon him. His wife and children, with the exception of George of Kansas, were at his bedside when he passed on.
Deceased was born in Lingen, Germany May 26, 1852, and when he was 21 years of age he sailed to this country, coming to the home of his sister, Mrs. John Peters, at Germantown. There he worked on the farm until he was united in marriage, being in the year 1876 to Miss Mary Wibben. To them one child was born who later was married to Gus Stoff but she died in 1903 in OK. Mr. Welling's first wife died a year and three months after their marriage.
In 1879 he married Miss Mary Marchack. They lived hap! pily together 20 years, during which time eight children were born to them, but only one child from this union survives, namely, George Welling, of Murdock, Kansas. His second wife died 20 years their marriage. The on April 28, 1903, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Geo. Rieling, and to this union six children were born, tow of whom died in infancy.
Those who survive are: Mrs. Geo Kuhl of St. Louis, and Bernard, Leo and Louis Welling all of home. There is also one step-daughter, Rose, who is Mrs. Leo Seger, of this city. He also leaves his wife and 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the St. Francis Church at Aviston Wednesday morning, and interment was in St. Francis Cemetery there.
During the 83 years of Mr. Welling's life, he brought happiness to many, always having a smile, always friendly and cheerful. He was a faithful Catholic, and did everything he could for the parish at Aviston and for the hospital and school. For 2! 6 years he took the hospital sisters through the Aviston district with horse and wagon, to collect potatoes and other necessities. He lived there until 1923 when he moved to his sister's farm, 3 1/2 miles northeast of Albers, where he also made many friends, and lived there until he retired in August 1930, when he returned to Aviston. He belonged to the "Old Gentlemen's Card Club", whose members played cards eery day except Saturday and Sunday. He enjoyed life until three weeks ago, at which time he became ill with the flu. He was a very jolly many at all times, never having any cross words, appearing at all times to be happy. Because of his pleasant disposition he was familiarly called "Puet Ben", meaning "well". Our sympathy is extended to the bereaved family in their said loss.
