The following is written by Joyce Hyson Burch:
My name is Joyce Burch. My maiden name was Joyce Hyson, and I am the great granddaughter of Conrad Heusohn. I saw the info on your website, and wanted to clarify some things. My mother has a copy of Rose and Conrad's marriage certificate taking place in Monroe County, Illinois. We are certain that is where the marriage took place, not in Blue Mound, Ks., where William (my grandfather) and his descendants lived.
The name on the marriage certificate reads "Rosa North", but my mother personally knew her, and also has a copy of the death certificate saying "Rose". The tombstone in the Blue Mound cemetery has the name "Rose". My mother was good friends with Rose's brother's daughter who went by the last name "Nord", and always believed Rose's maiden name to be Nord. On the marriage certificate the name Rosa North was written by the clerk instead of Rose herself. Rose and Conrad both grew up in a very German settlement, and
spoke mostly German. We believe her German accent probably caused the clerk to write the name down wrong.
My grandfather William and his family ( Conrad and Rose and other children) only spoke German in their home until the time William went to school. The school only used English, and William simplystopped speaking altogether, so Conrad decided it was time to start speaking
English, and he also began spelling their last name Hyson. My mother thinks it was probably not legally changed, just informally adopted,and Conrad, Rose, and all their descendants have all gone by Hyson from about 1897 on. It was William who settled in Blue Mound, Ks., and consequently had his parents buried there.
To sum up-
Conrad and Rose were married in Illinois.
Rose Anna Nord is the correct name.
Heusohn became Hyson about 1897 for Conrad and his descendants.
