The following is from the 1947-48 Official Manual of the State of Missouri:, p. 159:
J.C. Wagner (Republican). Representative from Polk County, was born in Ray County, Missouri, November 27, 1889. Moved to Oklahoma in 1894 and was educated in the public schools of Oklahoma. Has been a resident of Polk County for the last thirty years {Note: used same "thirty years" in 1943-44 manual}. He is a farmer and is single. Served seventeen months in World War I. Elected representative in 1942 and re-elected in 1944 and 1946. In the Sixth-fourth General Assembly he was chairman of the committee on Resolutions and Miscellaneous Business and a member of the following committees: Accounts; Eleemosynary Institutions; and Miitary Affairs. Address: Bolivary, Missouri.
The following was printed, May 25, 1972 in the Herald-Free Press, Bolivar, Polk County, Missouri.
Title: Ex-legislator burns self to death.
Funeral services were held Saturday for a three-time Republican state representative from Polk County who killed himself Thursday morning by pouring gasoline on his clothing and setting himself on fire.
Polk County Coroner Paul Butler said Joseph C. Wagner, of Route 3, was despondent over the sale of his farm the previous weekend. The 82 year old retired farmer was a lifelong resident of his farm home.
Mr. Wagner apparently set himself afire about 8:30 A.M. Earlier that morning, his wife, Ruby, told the Polk County Sheriff's office she and her husband argued and he had beaten her with a hammer. He released her, she said, on the condition that she would come to Bolivar and obtain the necessary papers to commit Mr. Wagner to the state hospital at Nevada.
Mrs. Wagner, bleeding and bruised, came with a friend to Sheriff Roy Bruce's office. Later, when Circuit Judge Charles Barker arrived, they obtained the admittance papers and called the state hospital to inform them that Mr. Wagner would be arriving there the same day.
Just as Deputy Rick Richards was leaving the courthouse to get Mr. Wagner, a neighbor of the Wagner's called to report they had found him, apparently shortly after he had set himself afire in the yard.
A Polk County Ambulance was summoned by the sheriff's office, but Mr. Wagner died enroute to Cox Medical Center in Springfield.
Mr. Wagner was a World War I veteran and a member of the American Legion.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. in Butler Chapel and military rites were conducted by the American Legion at Greenwood Cemetery where he is buried.
Besides Mr. Wagner's wife, survivors include two brothers, Dick, of Bolivar, and Bill of Higbee; six sisters, Mrs. Elsie Eck, Read Oak, Okla., Mrs. Lilian Atrrera, Denver, Colo., Mrs. Louise Cox, San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Mary Gregovich, Yugoslavia, Mrs. Charmain Caldwell, Route 3, and Mrs. Frances Walkins, Higbee.

The town of Laynesville was situated on Sec. 32, Twp. 52 N, Range 22 West, on the bank of the Missouri River. It was founded in 1870 by John W. Layne, a large stock dealer, shipper and commission merchant then living in the town of Malta Bend on the Petite Saw Plains. G. T. Walden opened the first store, having a stock of general merchandise. A post-office was located here very soon after it was laid out ... In 1875, when it was at its Zenith, it had one general store, one grocery store, one large flouring mill, three large warehouses, one saw mill, two physicians, one church and one good school. In 1881 it dwindled down to one general store and post-office, two warehouses, two saw mills, one church and one school ... (--Hist. of Saline Co., 1881, pp. 456, 457.) It is no longer listed.

Martin Hillebrand said that his father grew hemp (marijuana) around the vegetable garden as it kept bug and varmint out of the garden. The amount of hemp fiber was counted on the 1880 US agricultural census.
