Research notes:
The Forde bygdebok, organized by farm name and number, may be available to you in Minnesota. The Univ. of Minn. Wilson library in Minneapolis may have a copy you can use on site. You may also be able to get a copy through an interlibrary loan at your local library. Ask your librarian how it's done. Here are the call numbers and other information you need.
FORDE
Forsund, Finn B. Forde bydgebok: Gardssoge og soga om folket. As: Forde kommune, 1990.
Call No. DL596.F75 F67 1990 v.1-2
Howard also has a copy and is willing to do lookups.
hlodee@@juno.com
Another quick thing you can do is post this query at the Sogn og Fjordane query page.
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.scan-balt.norway.counties.sognogfjordane
Include the information that Lisa found for you. The mother's maiden name, etc.
Meanwhile back in Minnesota, you should send for his original copy of the Social Security application through the Social Security death index website. It will name his father and mother if you don't know their names.
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/fto_ssdisearch.html
His parents should be on the online census for 1900 Norway, so that will help to know their names.
Next, get his death certificate, and possibly his Naturalization (citizenship) papers and application. He had to give a lot of information for those. If you are in the Twin Cities, go to the St. Paul History Center. They can help you there.
Stendal is a farm name on the 1900 census in Solund, and Steindal is a farm name on the 1900 census in Vevring, which is in Forde according to Lisa.
Both are in Sogn og Fjordane, north of Bergen. So perhaps the name originates with his father's home farm.
If you know the names of his parents, it may be possible to find them on the census of 1900.

Bennefield have not been found; but, they purchased land in Walton County, GA in 1823, just before the marriage of James K. Bennefield and Alsey Kimbell. The names William, Needham and Dock follow through the descendants of Needham and the name, James K., is found in many of the Ragers's descendants. Personen : (Unknown) Claricy, Layton Thomas (Jr.)
From Fred Layton's Book: By Fred Layton:
When I was a boy, I was given information about Thomas Layton, who was my Great Grandfather, who died abt. 40 years before I was born. This story was from a fine old lady, Mrs. Mary Watson. Her maiden name was Little, this family lived near the Laytons at the time of Thomas Layton's death. She stated that he died in his sleep, (heart attack). His wife awoke in the night and discovered that he was dead. She being blind by this time, she bathed his body, changed his clothes, and laid him out, as it was called in those days.
As no other member of the family was home, she sat down in the door and when the chickens came off their roost and came into the yard, she knew by this that it was daylight. Then she began calling the Littles who lived one fourth of a mile away and they were soon in the Layton Home.
Mary Layton Thornburg, a granddaughter of the above Laytons stated to me that she spent some time with her grandmother when a child and said that Thomas Layton had been making syrup for a neighbor, a Mr. Laymon, and had come home very tired, the evening before he died. By this we know he died in the fall of that year. Mary Thornburg could also remember her Grandmother Clarisey smoking the clay pipe as many ladies did in those days.
I have heard my father say that as a boy, would light this clay pipe for his grandmother and there acquired the tobacco habit.

Married Whitley-Garred at the Nicholas Hotel in this city on the 27th. inst. by the Rev. W.W. Percival. Andrew Jackson Whitley to Emma B Garred both of Milton, Umatilla County, Oregon.
Research from Vancouver Archives, April 26, 1991.
Victoria 1887 Directory - Rev.W.W. Percival, Pastor of Wesley Church, Avadra St near Mason St (Victoria, BC).
Family tradition states after the wedding, Samuel, Catherine, Andrew, Emma, William and Rosia, travelled by ship from Victoria down the Pacific coast to Chile. The family was moving to Argentina to establish a cattle ranch. The ship they were traveling on was Quarantined At some point the travel plans changed and they returned to Vancouver. When the trans Canadian railroad was complete in 1887 the family traveled by train to Alberta where they settled on a ranch near Okotoks, Alberta.
After the death (drowned in the creek) of Andrew and Emma's first child and the death of Catherine Whitley the family moved to Thompson Falls, Montana to be near Ulysses and Mary Garred (Emma's Great-Aunt and Great-Uncle). They stayed in Thompson Falls 4 to 6 years. They moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, (see 1900 US Census). Andrew worked roads. He had teams working on road construction. The family moved to Asotin in 1901 where they had a wheat ranch.
Andrew, Emma, Bill and Pearl moved to the 70 Mile House in British Columbia. The Pre-empted the ranch at North Bonaparte in 1909. The Ranch was a stopping point for travellers between the 70 and Bridge Lake. People would stop for meals and horse feed and a place to sleep.
