Era Lydia Upchurch Miller, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Early Upchurch, was born at Flat River, Mo., on December 10, 1906. She passed from this life, May 6th, 1943, being 36 years, four months, twenty six days.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon, May 9, 1943, at the First Church of God by her pastor, Rev. Claud Carl, assisted by Rev. W. C. Polson, pastor of the Baptist Church. Interment Leadwood Cemetery. J. S. Boyer and Son, funeral directors.
On June 23, 1923, she was married to George Miller of Leadwood. God blessed this marriage with three children, Reva, Georgia and Kay, all at home with the parents. Besides these children, Mrs. Miller shared her home with three other children for a number of years who were Marvin, Gene and Zeldara Miller, two brothers and a sister of her husband, providing for them in her home the same as her own children. Besides the above mentioned family she leaves to mourn her going, her father and mother and one sister, Mrs. Lena Arnoldi of Leadwood, other relatives and many friends.
Mrs. Miller professed faith in Christ at the age of 13 and joined the Baptist Church. Later with her husband she fellowshiped with the Church of God and remained faithful until death came. For several years she was superintendent of the primary department of the Sunday School, being very patient and kind to the children and was loved by them all. An outstanding characteristic of her life was her willingness to help anyone sick or in need. She gave every evidence to those in attendance to her during her illness that she was ready and willing to go when the Master called.
Mrs. Miller was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter and Pythian Sister Lodge.

George Miller, elder brother of Arthur Miller, recently elected Sheriff, died suddenly today in Desloge at about 2 p.m., presumably from a heart attack.
Mr. Miller was having some work done on his small truck at Edwards Garage and was standing by the truck which was parked on the street outside the garage when he suddenly collapsed. Bystanders called a doctor who responded immediately, but was unable to revive the man.
His physician stated that Mr. Miller had been suffering from a heart aliment for some time.
Mr. Miller was well known in St. Francois County Harvey (?) had been associated with his brother in the feed business in Desloge for a number of years.

George Walter Miller, son of the late Anthony and Mildred Todd Miller was born on a farm six miles south of Potosi, Mo., October 8, 1884, and departed this life in Desloge, suddenly of a heart attack at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 3, 1941, aged 56 years, 3 months, 25 days.
He was united in marriage to Vada Humphrey, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Humphrey of Irondale, Mo., August 21, 1926. They have resided in Desloge since their marriage, he having been engaged in the feed and coal business with his brother, Arthur.
Besides his widow, he leaves four brothers: Carl of Potosi; Clarence of St. Louis; Arthur of Farmington, and John of Los Angeles, California; also two sisters: Kate (Mrs. C. McComber) of Potosi, and Mary (Mrs. Alfred Hampton) of St. Louis, together with other relatives and a host of friends.
He was characterized by those who knew him as a "friend to all". His interests, congential disposition and honesty won him friends whereever he went.
Funeral services were held at the Desloge Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. W. McDaniel, of St. Clair, assisted by Rev. H. W. Doss. A quartet composed of Earl Whitener, Chester Holley, Miss Jean Jenings and Mrs. Julia Morris sang his favorite hymn, "Lead Kindly Light," also "Safe In the Arms of Jesus," and a request solo, "The Old Rugged Cross", was sung by Mrs. Morris Ward, Mrs. J. W. Hibbits was the accompanist.
Burial was in St. Francois Memorial Park Cemetery. C. Z. Boyer Service.

Frank P. Leven
Frank [Francis Paul Nicholas] Leven, longtime Newkirk area farmer; died early
Tuesday morning, Aug. 31, 1993, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Ponca
City. He was 85.
A prayer service has been scheduled for 7: 30 p.m., Thursday, in the Miller-
Stahl Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Marvin Leven and Rev. Lowell Stieferman
officiating. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, in St.
Francis Catholic Church in Newkirk. Burial will follow in Newkirk Cemetery.
Leven was born April 7, 1908, at Ponca City, the son of John Joseph and
Gertrude (Conrady) Leven. He I grew up near Newkirk and attended St. Francis
Catholic. Elementary School and graduated from St. Francis Catholic High
Schools. On Jan. 7, 1930, he was married to Helen Sheik in Newkirk and the
couple made their home on a farm in the Newkirk area. On Nov. 29,1943, Leven
was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in the Enlisted Reserve
Corps, training aircraft mechanics at the Darr School in Ponca City. He was
discharged April 18, 1944, and returned to farming. Leven also did contracting
for homes and building in the area for many years.
He was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church; held third and fourth
degrees in the Knights of Columbus, and served for many years on the Federal
Land Bank Board.
Survivors include his wife, Helen, of the home; one son, Dee Leven of Newkirk;
one brother, Tony Leven of Newkirk; one sister Maria Gray of Ponca City; six
grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Francis Haney; his parents; three brothers, Otto Leven, Joe Leven
and Bishop Stephen A. Leven; two sisters, Rosa Elizabeth and Katie Larchy; and
a grandson.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Leven's name to St. Francis Catholic

ARVEL WATTS' STORE ROBBED SAT. NIGHT:
Arvel Watts' store in Taylortown was broken into and robbed some time during the latter part of the night, Saturday.
The robbers entered by breaking the lock on the front door. About $75 or $80 worth of merchandise was stolen, including cigarettes, tobacco, silk hose and overalls. The entire store was ransacked and a sack of corn and a sack of mixed feed were emptied on the floor.

Arvel W. Watts, 95, of Farmington, originally of Flat River, MO. He was born May 6, 1903, in Flat River. He passed away Thursday, June 11, 1998, at the Presbyterian manor in Farmington. He was the son of the late John W. and Fannie Alberta Miller Watts. His wife, Golda Hahn Watts preceded him in death. Two sisters, Nell Ketcherside and Nova Caldwell also preceded him in death.
Survivors are three sisters: Ann Ephland of Nevada, MO, Iva J. Ball of Park Hills and Helen Spence of Farmington. Several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
In 1992 Roosevelt Street in Park Hills was changed to Watts Street in recognition of Arvel's generosity to Friends and neighbors during the depression years. Arvel was a Co-Founder of the Church of Christ located on Columbus Street in Farmington, MO.
Visitation will be Saturday, 6:30 p.m. at the Caldwell Memorial Chapel in Park Hills. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, June 14, at 2:00 p.m. at the Caldwell Memorial Chapel in Park Hills. Family members Steve Spence and Jerry Ketcherside officiating. Burial at Hillview Memorial Gardens in Farmington.

Mrs. Georgianna Ledbetter, passed away at her home near Farmington, Wednesday evening, May 6, 1936, following an illness of three days. She sustained a stroke of paralysis Sunday afternoon from which she rallied slightly, but a second stroke on Tuesday rendered her unconscious and she never rallied. She was 76 years of age.
Georgianna Williams, daughter of the late Dr. W. B. and Mary Cole Williams, pioneer citizens of St. Francois County, was born on the old Williams farm near Farmington in January 1860. She was married to the late H. B. Ledbetter, prominent lawyer and judge, who preceded her in death twelve years. Surviving are two sons, Frank Ledbetter of Carterville, Ill., and Reuben Ledbetter of Schenectady, New York, and a daughter, Miss Mary Ledbetter of Cicero, Ill. She also leaves three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Ella McEwen of Farmington, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the Murphy-Long Memorial M. E. Church, South, of which she had been a devoted member for nearly half a century, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. H. A. Gibbs, assisted by Rev. Clarence Burton of Bonne Terre. Interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery.

Finis E. Boyd, well known Flat River man, passed away in Bonne Terre Hospital, Friday, May 29, 1959, after a prolonged illness. He was born near Doe Run, Mo., on April 15, 1873, a son of the late John and Lucinda (Chapman) Boyd, and was age 86 years 1 month 14 days at the time of death. He was employed for many years as machinist for St. Joseph Lead Company, and had been retired 19 years.
On April 16, 1903 he was married to Mary Elser, who survives with five children: Genevieve (Mrs. R. G. Gideon), Granite City, Ill.; LeRoy and Miss Ruth Boyd, St. Louis; Margaret (Mrs. John Paul), Phoenix, Ariz.; and Betty (Mrs. D. W. Tittman), Hoyt Lakes, Minn. He was preceded in death by three children: Ethel (Mrs. James Cole), Harold and Mary Agnes Boyd. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and a sister, Cordelia (Mrs. Arthur Pritchard), Mt. Vernon, Ill.
Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, May 31, at the Alvin W. Hood Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Nance, pastor of Taylor Avenue Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in St. Francois Memorial Park.

Benjamin Franklin Miller of Farmington [St. Francois County, MO] passed away on March 13, 2002 at the Mineral Area Regional Medical Center at the age of 86 years. He was born on January 7, 1916 at Iron County, the son of the late Jay and Nettie (Morris) Miller. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Bloom Miller.
Before his retirement, Mr. Miller was an engineer for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Delassus.
He is survived by two sons, Benny Edward Miller and wife, Shirley of Crestine, CA, Larry Miller and wife, Beverly of Farmington; a brother, Kenneth Miller of Park Hills; two sisters, Edna Lewis of Bismarck and Hazel Baker of Pellston, MI; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Cozean Memorial Chapel on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Marler officiating. Burial will follow at the Chestnut Ridge Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Donor's Choice.

MALCOLM LEE THURMAN
Malcolm Lee Thurman, Bonne Terre business man, died in St. Luke's Hospital, St. Louis, on Friday, February 20, 1959. He was born in Leadwood, Mo., August 16, 1909, a son of Mrs. Della (Newby) Thurman and the late Dennis Thurman, and at the time of death was aged 49 years 6 months 4 days.
Mr. Thurman was engaged in restaurant work for several years and later owned and operated a service station. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
On April 30, 1949 he was married to Lahoma Elizabeth Wells, who survives. He also leaves two sons, David Thurman of Bonne Terre and Lydle Thurman of the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed in California; his mother, who resides in Bonne Terre; four sisters: Miss Myrtle Thurman, Sylvia (Mrs. W. A. Armstrong) and Madlyn (Mrs. R. L. Ravenstein), all of St. Louis, and Claudine (Mrs. Charles Johnson), Lakeland, Fla.; and three brothers: Ivan Thurman of Bonne Terre, Stanley Thurman of St. Louis, and Sgt. Dennis Thurman of the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed in North Carolina. His first wife, Aline Buscher Thurman, died in 1943.
Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. C. H. McClure. Interment was in St. Francois Memorial Park. C.Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Service of Bonne Terre.

VERNA MAE BOYD
Miss Verna Mae Boyd, better known as "Bootsie," passed away at her home in Coffman, Mo., Sunday, August 1, 1965, at the age of 50 years. She was born in Ste. Genevieve County, Mo., Nov. 29, 1914.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Boyd of Coffman; two sisters, Mrs. (Ruth) Emmett Martin and Mrs. (Hazel) William Pratt of Coffman, and three brothers, Blair Boyd of Coffman, Arvalle Boyd of St. Louis, and Norman Boyd of Farmington, nieces and nephews.
The body was in state at the Miller Funeral Home in Farmington, where the Rosary was recited Monday evening at seven o'clock. Funeral services were held at ten o'clock Tuesday morning, August 3, at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Coffman, conducted by the Rev. William Wolf. Interment was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Bloom died suddenly at her home in Flat River, Saturday, March 3, 1962. She was the wife of the late Walter Bloom. She was born in Ste. Genevieve county, Mo., February 8, 1883, a daughter of the late William and Monte (Horton) Edwards and at the time of death was aged 79 years 25 days.
She is survived by two children: Walter William Bloom of Flat River and Dorothy (Mrs. Charles Pilgrim) of Desloge; a sister, Mrs. Mattie Miller of Fredericktown, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, March 6, at the Raymond Caldwell & Son Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Harold Nance, pastor of Taylor Avenue Methodist Church. Interment was in Hillview Memorial Gardens.

She is survived by four sons: Bill & Emory of Fredericktown, & Roy & Earl of St. Louis, along with 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Mrs. Miller was preceeded in death by sisters: Minnie Cunningham,Sarah Bloom,Mary Robinson, Anna Hahn, and brothers: Fillmore & Willie Edwards. She
was a member of the Compton Heights Baptist Church in St. Louis.
Burial was in the Little Vine Cemetery with the Rev S A Hand officiating. Pallbearers were her five grandsons: Robert, Don, Glen, Jim, Jerry & Keith Miller, & Harold Clauser The Wilson Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
NOTE: Martha Ellen Edwards Miller was actually born in 1880 according to the census. She was the niece & namesake of Mattie Ellen Edwards Cunningham, wife of George W. Cunningham.

Roberta was a member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church and formerly employed at Farmington Community Hospital.

Milton Dewey Thompson, 83, of Leadwood, passed away March 18, 2002, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was born Dec. 17, 1918, in Leadwood, son of the late Grover J. and Cora (McPike) Thompson. Also preceded by brothers: Darrell G. Thompson, Earl Thompson and Milford Thompson; one sister, Oneida Thompson.
He was a member of the Leadwood Methodist Church; Masonic Lodge #598 of Leadwood and Scottish Rite, Mineral Chapter #260 OES. He had assisted Bert Boyer and Bert Robby for many years in the operation of Leadwood Funeral Home. He had served in the United States Army during WWII.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Lee (Beckler) Thompson of Leadwood and a brother, Robert L. Thompson of Park Hills.

At about 20 years of age William left Cincinnati. He came up the Mississippi river by boat to Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, and since there was no other conveyance, he walked over a plank road to Farmington, Missouri. (The road was used to haul iron ore from Iron Mountain to Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.)
In his early years he was a boot maker. His son, George recalled him telling that he had made many pair for $12.00 per, and sold them to the ox cart drivers that hauled the iron ore.
