The manor of Waldana (Saffron) in the Hundred (district) of Udelsforda was one of many manors given to a Norman noble, Geoffrey de Mandeville by King William the Conqueror. The manor was built on the highest point of land called Bury Hill. Dating from between 1125 and 1141, it was possibly built by Geoffrey de Mandeville II, grandson of Norman noble, Geoffrey I. In 1143 de Mandeville was forced to surrender his castles to King Stephen. It was restored to Geoffrey de Mandeville III in 1156. A license to fortify was granted in 1347 to Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Essex. The castle later fell to ruin. In 1765 it was written that "a great deal of it has been carried away to mend the roads".
