Personen : Cash Glenwood
[Bonne Terre Star/Friday, Sept. 16, 1927]
A very sad accident happened in Bonne Terre last Saturday morning, September 10th, about 8:30, when Glenwood Cash, small son of the late Jas. [James] Cash, accidently shot and fatally wounded Mike Vargo, 11 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Vargo.
The tragedy happened when the children were enjoying the school holiday and were playing in the yard. The Cash youth was playing in the yard of the Zavonda home, together with the Zavonda children. The little Vargo boy, who lived across the alley from this yard, came out to his woodshed to stack up some wood. Upon seeing the other children and noticing the Cash playmate with a gun, he playfully yelled, "I'll give you a free shot." His companion replied "no." The Vargo boy then closed the door of the woodshed and continued to stack his wood. Glenwood remained seated, with his gun pointed in the direction of where the Vargo child had stood. In trying to cock his gun again, in some manner it discharged. The fact that it was a bolt hammer made it easy to discharge. The boy had evidently planned to shoot at something else and had entirely forgotten the incident previous, as the door of the Vargo woodshed had been closed. However, the bullet went through the door and struck the child under the right fourth rib, directly across from the heart. Glenwood did not know that he had shot his playmate until he saw him flee from the shed and rush to the porch of his home where he collapsed. A physician was immediately called but the child died before medical attention could be given him, and without uttering one word. An inquest was not held as the boys who were playing with them testified that the shooting was accidental.
The funeral services were held Monday morning at the Catholic Church and interment took place in the Catholic Cemetery.
Our hearts go out in deep and abiding sympathy to the parents of little Mike and to the grief-stricken playmate and his mother in the sorrow that has come into their lives.

THE STAR, Bonne Terre, St. Francois Co. MO, Fri. July 24, 1914
Mattie Ellen, youngest daughter of Thomas and Annie (Christopher) Boyd was born near Salem, Dent County, Mo., on February 14, 1863, and died at Bonne Terre, Mo., July 19, 1914 aged 51 years, 5 months and 5 days. She had suffered three strokes of paralysis, the last proving fatal and death coming at 8:25 Sunday morning.
She had lived in and about Bonne Terre the greater part of her life, having moved with her mother and family to Germany Settlement west of town when she was nine years of age. On March 11, 1880 she was united in marriage to George W. Brand with whom she moved to the old Hilderbrand farm on Big River north of town. To this happy union were born ten children, nine of which are now living: Mrs. Annie Schaefer of Bonne Terre, Dr. E. T. Brand of St. Louis, Mrs. Rosa Baker and Mrs. Addie Ferguson of Bonne Terre, Wyman Brand of St. Louis, Dewey, Bryan, Lee and Alma of Bonne Terre.
Besides her husband and children she leaves two brothers, Wm. Boyd of near Cedar Falls, and John Boyd of Montana; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah McCartney of Plattin and Mrs. Jane Hunt of Salem; and a host of friends and other relatives to mourn her departure from this world.
She was a member of the Centenary M.E. Church at Bonne Terre, having joined it under the ministry of Rev. A. S. Coker.
She was a loving and devoted wife, a splendid mother, a good neighbor and friend to all of her acquaintances. None ever entered her home without a warm welcome nor left without feeling the warmth of genuine hospitality. Her long illness did not destroy the charm of a kind and indulgent disposition nor diminish her unselfish solicitude for her family and friends.
Mrs. Brand was pre-eminently of that character of womanhood that marks the rise of the true American family and the success of her children have proven her worth.
Funeral services were conducted from Centenary M.E. Church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, by Rev. N. B. Henry, and interrment was made in the Hilderbrand Cemetery on the old home place where so many happy years were spent and where she will be at rest beneath the shady trees on its sloping hillside where the flowers are sweetest, and the birds warble their most melodious songs, where she will be surrounded by the beauty, happiness and contentment of the sylvan scenes she loved so well in life.
