ESTHER BOY BADLY BURNED IN EXPLOSION CAUSED BY COAL OIL.
Theodore Reed, 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe [Joseph] Reed of Esther, was the victim of a painful acident, late Thursday afternoon of last week.
The fire in a heater in the home having needed replenishing, Theodore was directed to do the work. Finding the fire at a low ebb, the boy opened the door, and threw a quantity of coal oil on the live coals still remaining. This formed a gas. The boy lighted a match and pitched it in the stove.
An explosion followed, the flames enveloping the child. All his eyebrows and a large portion of his hair was burned from his head. His clothing caught fire and he would in all probability have been burned to death, had it not been for the forethought and quick action of his older brother, June Reed, 15 years, who was near. The brother seized a large towel, dipped it in a bucket of water, and enveloped his younger brother, extinguishing the flames.
The boy is badly burned about the head and face, but is recoverying.

FATAL SHOOTING ACCIDENT NEAR ELVINS MONDAY
A very sad and unexpected death occurred, Monday afternoon, when Oscar Young, 17 years old, was accidentally shot in the woods near Elvins. His home was in St. Louis. He and another young fellow, a life long friend and chum, named George LaBaume, also 17 years old, came to Elvins Sunday evening for a few days visit with Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Kenner, who are an uncle and aunt of young LaBume.
The boys went into the woods, Monday afternoon, taking with them a number 12 shot gun and a sack, in the hope of doing some hunting and finding some walnuts. After walking until they were tired they decided to rest. They leaned the gun against a tree and proceeded to spread the sack on the ground, in order that they might sit on it. They noticed that the gun was slipping and both boys attempted to catch it, to prevent its falling to the ground. The gun was equipped with a safety snap, but they had neglected to put it on. In some way, the gun was discharged, the full load of shot entering Oscar's neck at the side and passing out at the back. It severed the main artery in the neck and he scarcely moved after he was shot. The muzzle of the gun was only about 18 inches from his neck, and his shirt was set on fire, which his companion quickly extinguished.
Young LaBaume returned to town as quickly as he could, but fainted as soon as he reached Mr. Kenner's home. As soon as he recovered sufficiently, he told what had happened, and led a party of men to the place. The remains were brought to the Diemer undertaking rooms, where an inquest was held Tuesday morning at 8:30 o'clock by Coroner C. R. Prather, and a verdict of death by accidental gun shot was turned in.
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Younger, the mother and step-father of Oscar, and Mr. and Mrs. S. C. LaBaume, the parents of George, came here, Monday night, from St. Louis. Mr. and Mrs. Younger were compelled to return to the city, Tuesday morning, for the reason that Mr. Younger's father, who is making his home with them, is at the point of death. Mr. and Mrs. LaBaume remained until Wednesday, and took the remains with them, to the city, where the funeral will be held today (Friday) after which interment will be made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

[The Lead Belt News/January 8, 1964]: MRS. SARAH AUBUCHON REACHES AGE OF 101.
Many remembrances and greetings were received by Mrs. Sarah Aubuchon of Bonne Terre, Route One on the occasion of her 101st birthday on New Year's Eve. An 80 acre farm 6 miles north of Farmington, has been the home of the aged woman for the past 95 years. Living with her are four daughters: Miss Genevieve AuBuchon, Mrs. Philamena McKeon and Mrs. Emilie Smith.
Another daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Barton, lives in Wyandotte, Mich., and two of her sons living are John AuBuchon of Sebastopal, Calif., and Eugene Aubuchon of Ellwood City, Pa.
The last day of the year represents two important anniversaries in the life of Mrs. AuBuchon. She was born December 31, 1862, near Irondale, Mo., and was married December 31, 1885, to Basil J. AuBuchon, who died in 1926.
Mrs. AuBuchon has been confined to her bed most of the time during recent months, but her mind remains alert. Due to failing eyesight she has had to give up her favorite past-time of reading.
Her memories, however, are many. She is descended from a pioneer St. Francois County family, the Murphys who came to the Farmington area from Virginia in the early 1800's. Notable among her recollections is the fact that she has traveled by modes of transportation ranging from the ox cart to jet airliner.
