Personen : Casey Randolf
Randolph was supposedly named for a friend and neighbor of his parents. He moved with his parents to South Carolina about 1760-68.
He was married in abt 1762 (maybe in Spartanburg, SC) maybe to Mary Jane Pennington (SC kept no official marriage records at that time). But they may have married in Virginia because they may have moved to South Carolina near Spartansburg with his parents about 1770. According to "Land Grant Maps," a grant of 300 acres indicated that Randolph was married and had three children at the time. This grant was later granted in 1772 and is located in the extreme southeast corner of present-day Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
There has been no record found that proves that Randolph married Mary Jane. It comes from a family history compiled by Lewis F. Casey in 1876.E Lewis Casey wrote that information pertaining to the early history of the Casey line was "gained largely from Gov. Zadok Casey and from my Grandmother, 'Aunt Nancy Casey,' the wife of Abraham Pennington Casey".E Lewis Casey writes "Randolph Casey, my great-grandfather, as above stated, was born in Virginia, but was raised and grew up in Spartanburg District, SC, where he married Mary Jane Pennington, a woman of superior mind and judgement.E From the best information I can get, he must have married in 1765 to 1768."E
However, Mary Jane's father, Jacob Pennington's list of his children in his will, included "Mary Noble."E
In the Revolutionary War he became a sargeant and served under Gen. Francis Marion, "The Swamp Fox of the Santee." Randolph, Levi & Benjamin were in the Second Carolina Regiment under Col. Elijah Clark and fought in the Battle of King's Mountain., Oct., 1780 (where a large British force, made up a Tories, was defeated by a group of American Patriots on the border between SC and NC) and was present on the occasion when Gen. Marion was holding a truce treaty with British officers and invited them to eat with them. The menu consisted of roasted sweet potatoes with nothing else. In making a written report to their commanding officers, the British soldiers stated, "Soldiers content to live on such fare can never be defeated!"
Randolph's will shows that his wife was Charity, so evidently he married 2nd to Charity Pennington, who was probably Mary Jane's younger sister. They could have married about 1788 as there is a 14-year gap in the births of his children then, and this would have made Mary Jane quite old to have had Hiram, Samuel and Zadok. However, they could have married after Zadok was born in 1796 (the DAR records lists Zadok's mother as Mary Jane Pennington. Zadok had a daughter named Mary Jane, but he may have also had a daughter named Charity).
They lived in Newberry Co, SC until 1795 when they moved to Green Co, GA, where Zadok was born. Then about 1800 they moved to Sumner Co, TN, then on to Smith Co, Tn, where his daughter Rebecca married William DePriest about 1802. Randolph died in Smith Co., TN in 1814 His will was dated Aug. 3, 1814 and names his wife Charity, daughter Rebecca, and all sons. The "History of Jefferson County, Ill." says Zadok brought his mother with him to Ill. in 1817.
WILL OF RANDOLPH CASEY
"G.S.F. 5766, Smith Co, Tenn. Wills, page 161
In the name of God amen I Randolph Casey being of usual mind & memory calling to mind the mortality of the body and that it is appointed for all men once to die, commit my soul to God who gave it and my body to be decently burred [sic] at the discretion of my executors and I hereby ordain and appoint my sons Abram P. Casey and Saml. Casey executors of this my last will and Testament & such goods and chattles as it hath pleased God to bless me with I do dispose of in the following manner as I bequeath to my son Levi 2 dollers I leave and bequeath to my son Isaac 2 dollers I leave and bequeath to my son Abraham 2 dollers I leave and bequeath to my son Saml two dollers I leave and bequeath to my son Randolph 2 dollers I leave and bequeath to my son Hiram 2 dollers I leave and bequeath to my daughter Rebecca 2 dollers which several sums are to be paid to the said legatees after the decease of my beloved wife Charity all the lands horses cattle hogs & house hold furniture even all the goods chattles that I am now in possession of during her life and at her decease I leave and bequeath my lands stock of all the several kinds together with all my goods chattles & household furniture to my son Zadok after paying all my just debts he also paying the above several sums to the rest of the legatees when legally demanded in Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 3rd day of August A.D. one thousand eight hundred & fourteen.
Randolph Casey (seal)
witnesses: Henry & Ginny McWhorter"
All of Randolph's children (except Zadok) were born in South Carolina;
all his children (except Hiram) moved to southern Illinois (though not at the same time);
and all (except Levi) settled around Mt. Vernon.
The only daughters I have for Randolph is Rebecca (my ancestor). Surely there were more. One possibility is:
"Nancy, born 1788 married abt 1810 Smith Co, Tn. to John Dotson. (Randolph Casey died in Smith county in 1814.) She died and is buried in what is now Macon Co, Tn. She named one of her children Hiram Casey Dotson. Family lore says that she had a brother who was very known preacher, a natural mathamatican and he became Lt. Gov of Illinois...his name was Zadock."

John H. (Hayden or Harvey) DePriest, b Oct 5, 1844, Thomasville, Mo (Rebekah's twin); grew up in Shannon County, Missouri.
In 1862 he joined the army during the Civil War--Confederate Army, Missouri 4th Inf, Company D; his brother Abraham was a Lieutenent in this company. John was in the battles of Corinth, Iuka, Post Gibson, and Vicksburg where he was captured & paroled. After he came home he went with father to Ill. in 1863 where he met and married Lydia in 1866, and farmed there until 1867.
He moved back to Shannon Co, Mo. in 1867 and farmed there near Birch Tree, Missouri.
He was appointed Postmaster for 4 years in 1880. In 1884 he sold his farm and bought another one closer to Birch Tree with 193 acres. By industry and good management he became one of the substantial men of the community. He was a Mason and an Oddfellow. He was Shannon County, Missouri Assessor in 1872, 1874 & 1884. He was a Democrat. He ran for Shannon County, Missouri sheriff [don't know the outcome].
From "Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region" (p 459)
John H. DePriest was born in Thomasville, Oregon County, Missouri, Oct 5, 1844, but grew to manhood in this county [Shannon] and is one of its representative citizens. His father, Isaac C. DePriest, was a native of Smith County, Tenn, but when a small child was taken to the Hoosier State, where he grew to manhood. From there he went to southern Illinois and thence to south Missouri about 1839 of 1840. He located near Thomasville, probably in the woods on upper Eleven Points, and made his home there until 1856, when he moved to Birch Valley, a short distance from where the town of Birch Tree now stands. In 1863, he moved from there to Jefferson County, Illinois, but returned two years later and located again in the same neighborhood. There he died in 1878 when seventy-two years of age. For many years before the war he was assessor of Oregon County, Missouri, and after the war he was appointed assessor of this county and held the position four years. He was also justice of the peace for some time. For the most part Mr. DePriest followed farming, but for a number of years before his death he sold goods on his farm. In politics he was a Democrat.
He [his father, Isaac] was married in south Illinois to Miss Elizabeth Buffington, a native of Blenerhasset Island, where Aaron Burr was said to have formed the conspiracy against the United States. Mrs. DePriest died in 1884, when 78 years of age. Both were for many years members of the Methodist Church. Born to their marriage were 9 children, of whom our subject is one of the youngest. Onlly 3 are now living: Greene, a farmer of Oregon County, and Mrs. Hess, of this county.
John H. DePriest grew up on Shannon County, received a fair education in the schools of the same, and in the spring of 1862 joined the 4th Missouri Confederate Infantry, Company D. His brother, Abraham, was lieutenant of this company. Our subject participated in the battles of Corinth, Iuka, Port Gibson, and Vicksburg, where he was captured. He was paroled and came home, and later went with his father to Illinois, where he followed farming until 1867, when he returned to Shannon Co, Mo. Here he commenced farming near Birch Tree where he bought land, but sold his farm in 1884 and bought another place near the town. He has 193 acres, the principal part under cultivation, and although he started with limited means, by industry and good management has become one of the substantial men of this section. In the year 1866 Miss Lydia Gregory, of Jefferson Co, IL, became his wife. Seven children have been born to this union, 2 sons and 5 daughters. Mr. DePriest is both a Mason and an Odd Fellow. He was assessor in 1872, 1874 and 1884, is a Democrat in politics, and is no candidate for sheriff of Shannon County, a position he is in every way qualified to fill."
