AGED MERCHANT DIED MON. P.M.
A. J. Norwine, Pioneer Flat River Business Man Passed Away.
Andrew Jackson Norwine, aged 77 years, 5 months and 14 days, passed away at his home in Flat River Monday evening, August 15, 1927 at 5:30 p.m. following a serious illness of less than a week with pneumonia. Funeral services were conducted at the Taylor Avenue Methodist Church, Flat River, Wednesday morning at ten o'clock by Rev. S. M. Robinson, assisted by Rev. William Stewart of Jackson, Mo. Interment was in Bonne Terre Cemetery.
As a mark of respect for the deceased every business house in Flat River closed during the hour of the funeral and practically every business man, together with their families, attended the services.
A. J. Norwine, "Uncle Jack", was a real pioneer in Flat River business. He first came to this community, then a small struggling mining settlement with little indications of the prosperous future that lay before it, in 1894, when he, with his brother, Willis, opened a store near the point now occupied by the Missouri Illinois depot. The great financial depression that swept over the country shortly after the two brothers opened their place of business cut into their revenue greatly, and, in 1895, he sold his interests to his partner. He had taken a great interest in the mining possibilities of this immediate vicinity, and spent much time and money in developing a large block of ground which later proved to be wealthy in lead deposits. However, he was unable to find a purchaser for the land before his options expired and was forced to step aside and allow his fortune to slip out from under his hands. The ground was later further developed and purchased by large lead interests and has all been mined at this time. In 1895 he went to St. Louis and entered business in that city, where he remained for about four years. However, his heart and his interests were in St. Francois county, his native land, and he returned to Flat River in 1899 and opened the New Era Store, which he and two sons, W. Cecil and Carroll E., have continuously operated since that date.
The perfect harmony that marked his long wedded life was marvelously beautiful and will ever live in the memories of their children and their friends. Their Golden Wedding Anniversary was celebrated in Flat River in 1922 and hundreds of guests gathered from all parts of Southeast Missouri and from more distant points. He was a member of the Taylor Avenue Methodist Church and this church was organized in his home in Flat River in 1890. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, having joined that organization fifty four years ago, and was a member of St. Louis Consistory No. 1, Scottish Rite of Free Masons.
Before entering business at Flat River he tried several other things and other locations. At the age of twenty years he taught the school which he had attended throughout his boyhood days, but left the field of teaching for the mercantile business after a very short time. His first business venture was with his brother at Big River Mills, from which location he stepped to a store of his own at DesArc, Mo. From DesArc he moved to Mineral Point, and from this latter place he moved to Doe Run. From Doe Run, he moved to Flat River, where he remained for the rest of his life, excepting that brief interval spent in St. Louis.
In the passing of this splendid old citizen, Flat River has suffered a distinct loss and Southeast Missouri has witnessed the going of one of her rugged old pioneers. To those who have been plunged in sorrow we offer condolence.
Some three or four years ago, realizing that the stress of business was telling upon his strength, he sold his interest in the store to the two sons and retired from active business. Since that time he has not been associated with any business beyond his own private affairs and his has been a familiar figure as he busied himself around his home on West Main Street, in the very heart of the city.
Andrew Jackson Norwine, son of Conrad and Elenor [Elander] Norwine, was born on a farm near Old Providence Baptist Church, Germany Settlement, March 1, 1850. The scene of his birth is located about six miles west of Bonne Terre. Given the name of that famous old American general and president, whose rugged character and strong convictions led him to such an important place in the United States in the early days of this country's stormy career, he later developed many characteristics similar to those which led "Old Hickory" from victory over the British troops at New Orleans to the White House as our seventh president. Throughout his life he stuck close to the political principals of that famous old Democratic warrior of a century ago, strong in his convictions, rugged and unyielding in his position, but withal, kind and considerate of others and free of any trace of bigotry or intolerance.
On that same day, March 1, 1850, Mary Anna Clarke was born in far away Virginia. When this tiny girl was three years of age her widowed mother moved with her to Missouri and settled near the Norwine home. The two children, exactly the same age, were almost constantly together throughout their childhood, attended the same little log school house, were the hottest of hot rivals in their efforts to outdo each other in their classes. Their interest in each other grew with the passing years and on June 27, 1872, they consecrated their lives to each other in the bonds of matrimony. For fifty-five years they walked together through life, always keeping the faith, everlastingly devoted to each other, to their children and their home. To this union nine children were born, seven sons and two daughters. Two of the sons died in infancy and one daughter, Bessie E., wife of H. J. Houser, died on November 9, 1924. His aged companion and five sons, W. Cecil, Carroll E., and Arthur C. of Flat River; Olin Dale and Floyd E. [or F] of St. Louis and one daughter Ada M. Caruthers of Cape Girardeau, survive him. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. William Tillson, Caledonia, Mo., and three brothers, C. A. of Bonne Terre, S. C. of Walnut Shade, Mo., and W. C. of St. Louis and a number of grandchildren and more distant relatives.

LOCAL BOY BURNED SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
John Mabery, eleven years of age, was painfully burned about his left leg last Saturday afternoon about four o'clock when a bucket of gasoline, being used in the Day and Night garage, Flat River, became ignited when a bystander carelessly threw a lighted match close to it, or into it. The little chap suffered severe burns from his foot to the upper portions of his hip. He was given medical attention and taken to his home, where he is reported as progressing nicely at this time.
The fire resulted when the little boy brought a bucket of gasoline into the garage to be used in cleaning some motor parts. As he handed it to one of the workmen there the match was either thrown in it, or so near that it ignited fumes, and the other party dropped the bucket when the blaze flashed up his arm and into his face. The blazing fluid was splashed on the lad and he dashed toward the front of the building with his clothing in flames. His half brother intercepted him and tore the burning clothing from him, probably saving his life. The truck was called from Rivermines, but the fire did no material damage to the building and was quickly extinguished.
