HENRY J. DIX SLAIN BY PATIENT AT STATE HOSPITAL.
Henry J. Dix of Doe Run, an employee at State Hospital No. 4, Farmington, was clubbed to death with a 30-inch length of iron pipe, by Charles Holmes, a hospital patient, last Saturday morning about ten o'clock. Another patient, Paul Frye, was seriously injured when he struggled with Holmes.
The tragedy occurred on the lawn in front of the Stephens building where Mr. Dix was resting in a lawn chair. An engineer at the power plant of the state institution, he was scheduled to report for duty at 2 p.m. He died within a few minutes after he was removed to the hospital division of the institution. Frye is expected to recover.
Holmes, whose home is in Mississippi County, Mo., has been a patient at the hospital three different times, the last period being ten years. He was ill of pneumonia the past year and was a trusty. He apparently had a sudden fit of violent insanity and struck Dix. He then hid the pipe and walked to the Administration building where he told Dr. E. F. Hoctor, Superintendent of the institution, that he had just killed two men.
An inquest was held on Monday afternoon at the Miller Funeral Home, conducted by Coroner Berl J. Miller, assisted by W. E. Coffer, assistant Prosecuting Attorney. The verdict was that Dix came to his death by injuries inflicted by an insane person. The jury also recommended that Holmes be committed to an institution for the criminally insane.
Funeral services for Mr. Dix were held Wednesday afternoon at the Doe Run Baptist Church, conducted by the Pastor, Rev. Guy Brown. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Doe Run, with Cozean service.
Henry John Dix, son of the late David and Rose Ann Valley was born in Iron Mountain, Mo., on October 9, 1882, and passed away on August 21, 1948, aged 65 years 10 months 12 days.
On February 26, 1906, he was united in marriage to Goldie Elsie Barnhouse. To this union two children were born: Verona (Mrs. Franklin) Smith of Route 3 Farmington, and Elsie (Mrs. Elmer) Burch of Doe Run. Following the death of his parents-in-law, he took into his home his sister-in-law, Mrs. Nancy Howe, and his three brothers-in-law, Bill, Glen and Ted Barnhouse, and cared for them until they were grown. Ted is deceased. He has been a foster father to Dallas Hunt the past 14 and a half years.

From: lazyw@@jcn.net (Connie Watkins)
There was at least one other Thomas Nations. Here's where it gets interesting:
"There is another Thomas NATIONS, born about 1806 to 1808 in Kentucky. This older
Thomas NATIONS appeared on the 1870 and 1880 Perry Co. Census with his wife,
Elizabeth. This Thomas NATIONS apparently was the one who married Elizabeth
HINKLE on Feb. 16, 1836 in Cape Girardeau Co., MO. I am certain there is a
familial relationship between the two Thomas NATIONS and also between the
two HINKLE brides, but have more questions than answers! A. BERTRAM; 2100
Bradyville Hill Road; Bradyville, TN 37026 or abertram@@hotcom.net"
Now here is another message from the net. "Most researchers agree Thomas
NATIONS, son of John NATIONS (Jr.) and Judith HENSLEY, was born June 11,
1818. The 1870 and 1880 Perry Co., MO Census show he was born in Kentucky.
His parents married in Obion Co., TN about 1809. Thomas NATIONS married
Frances Adeline HINKLE (HENKLE). I am trying to find where in KY Thomas
NATIONS was born." A. Bertram (Same address as above).

LOUIS THURMAN, 74, HURT BY KICK OF HORSE
Louis Thurman, 74 years of age, who makes his home on a farm east of Desloge, was quite seriously hurt one day last week, while watering some horses. He had led the horses to a pond about 100 yards from the house. Among the animals was a young horse who has a rather savage disposition. This horse began kicking at Mr. Thurman and succeeded in hitting him a couple of times, once beneath the shoulder blade and once in the side.
Mr. Thurman did not succeed in making any member of his family hear him and began the painful process of crawling to his home and had succeeded in making the greater part of the distance before he was discovered. He has been confined to his bed since the accident.
