LEAD BELT NEWS, Flat River, St. Francois Co. MO, Fri. Jan. 25, 1952.
BONNE TERRE BUSINESS MAN DIED THURSDAY:
Bonne Terre lost one of its most prominent citizens early Thursday morning, January 24, 1952, when Archibald Francis, better known as Arch, retired business man, passed away at Bonne Terre Hospital at 5:30 a.m. He was 75 years of age. Mr. Francis suffered a paralytic stroke about seven weeks ago and grew progressively worse until the end came.
Born near Bonne Terre, he was a son of the late Matthew F. and Barbara Caroline House Francis. He spent his entire life in Bonne Terre and attended the public schools in that city. When a young man he worked for several years as a butcher in the St. Joseph Lead Co. store, which was operated by Bonne Terre Farming & Cattle Co.
About 1902 he entered the meat market business, conducting a retail meat market in partnership with his brother, Herbert Francis. This partnership was dissolved in 1917, and in 1919 he opened a meat market and grocery in partnership with Henry McFarland, located on Division Street, which continued until 1940.
On October 25, 1904, he was united in marriage to Addie Barrett Richardson of Kimmswick, Mo., and they were the parents of a daughter, Mary Gracia, who died at the age of seven years, and a son, Barrett W. Francis, now residing in Bonne Terre and connected with Bonne Terre Farming & Cattle Co. His wife preceded him in death on December 12, 1928.
He was married on May 6, 1936 to Mrs. Georgine (Lucas) Biekert of St. Louis, who survives. Besides his wife and son, two grandchildren, Addiann and Donald Barrett Francis of Bonne Terre; two brothers, Herbert Francis, Bonne Terre, and Richard Francis, Miami, Fla., and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Francis Macy, Iowa Falls, Iowa, also mourn his passing.

[Lead Belt News, Flat River, St. Francois County, Missouri, December 21, 1928]
MRS. ARCH FRANCIS DIED AT BONNE TERRE:
Mrs. Arch Francis, aged 59 years, 6 months and 18 days, died Wednesday, December 12, 1928, at the Bonne Terre hospital, Bonne Terre, Mo., following an illness of about one year. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon, Dec. 14, 1928, at the Congregational church, Bonne Terre, by Rev. J. T. Stewart, and she was laid to rest in Bonne Terre Cemetery.
Addie Richardson, daughter of Booker and Sarah Richardson, was born at Kimmswick, Mo., May 25, 1829 [typo - should be 1869], and grew to womanhood in that community. There she attended and completed the public school course, following which she attended the normal school at Kirksville, Mo., preparing herself for the teaching profession. This line of effort she followed with splendid success in Jefferson and St. Louis counties for a number of years.
October 25, 1904, she was married to Arch Francis, and they took up residence at Bonne Terre, where they have resided for the past 24 years. Two children were born to this union, one, a daughter, dying in infancy. She is survived by her husband, one son, Barrett W., who resides in Bonne Terre and is employed in the office of the St. Joseph Lead Company, one brother, Arthur Richardson, and two sisters, Mrs. Julia McFarland, Wellston, Mo., and Mrs. L. E. Thomas, Omaha, Neb.
Mrs. Francis has long been one of the leaders of her community in church work and community welfare promotion. She transferred her membership to the Congregational Church at Bonne Terre 24 years ago from Maplewood, and has been an active member of that church since. Up until a few months ago, when illness forced her to relinquish the duties of the position, she was superintendent of the Sunday school of her church. She was president of the Woman's Missionary Society at one time, was an active member of the Home Culture Club, and was always an energetic and forceful worker in every forward looking undertaking which had at its aim betterment of the community welfare and advancement of the cause of Christianity.
In her death Bonne Terre has lost one of its most capable and devoted women, and her family has been deprived of a loyal and devoted wife and mother whose charm penetrated through the outer walls of her home life and radiated over the entire community.
The News offers sympathy to all those bereaved by her passing.

Personen : Beard Ed A.
LEAD BELT NEWS, Flat River, St. Francois Co. MO, Fri. Jan. 25, 1952.
E. A. BEARD, MAIL CARRIER, RETIRES:
January 1 of this year marked the closing of a Postal Career of forty-four years, one month and fifteen days for E. A. Beard on R.R. 1. Ed has been connected with Bismarck Post Office about 49 years, having worked in the Post Office when a young man attending public school, for some five years.
He has served under four postmasters: S. D. Bryan, H. C. Oehler and G. J. Goeltz, (all deceased) and the incumbent, F. W. Goeltz.
Ed has been the only carrier since the route was established on November 16, 1907.
The late J. H. Shaner, father of Fremont Shaner, was instrumental in securing establishment of this route.
He says his travels during this time has equalled many times the distance around the earth; in fact he drove one horse (Teddy) a little over 75,000 miles or equal to three times the distance around the earth. The horse lived to be 32 years of age.
The conveyance in the beginning was a two-wheeled cart, and then buggies, mail wagon, model T Fords, model A Ford and a Chevrolet. He served the route on horseback during the winter months before Parcel Post was established.
Ed can recall a lot about the hardships of winters in the early days and the condition of the roads years ago, and says we have come a long way since then in improving our roads.
Some ten years ago, the Irondale route was consolidated with the Bismarck route, making a total of 67 miles covered by the route, one of the longest in the State.
In recalling his many hardships, trying times and unpleasant experiences, Ed says it was the acts of kindness without number he can recall, rendered him by the patrons of his route, which after all really count.
There are only a few of the original patrons now living. Many of the young folks then are grandparents now.
Ed says he expects to do some fishing this season and of course follow his hobby of growing a garden, and maybe help the good wife with the flowers.
Retiring carrier Beard's patrons and friends everywhere are indeed grateful for his long years of efficient commendable service, and wish his days of retirement to be months of deserved rest and years of peace and happiness.--Bismarck Gazette.
