[Lead Belt News, St. Francois County, Missouri - April 6, 1951]
ONE OF COUNTY'S OLDEST CITIZENS PASSED AWAY FRIDAY MORNING, MARCH 30
Farmington and St. Francois County lost one of the finest and most respected old citizens Friday morning, March 30, 1951, at 1:30 when Judge J. H. Orten quietly slept away at his home at 510 "C" Street, Farmington, at the age of 96 years, 13 days, having celebrated his birthday on March 17.
James Hedgemon Orten was born on March 17, 1855, son of Nesbit and Lucinda Spradling Orten, on the Orten farm near what is now the town of Desloge. His mother died in 1863 and his father in 1869. Shortly after the death of his father he went to live with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse R. F. Edwards, near Salem Church in Ste. Genevieve County, with whom he lived for seven years, at the end of which time he rented the farm. In 1876 he was converted in a revival meeting at the Salem Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Henry S. (Rough and Ready) Watts and joined the church and has since continued a member of the Methodist Church, moving his membership to Farmington when he came to live in Farmington, rarely missing a Sunday service even at his advanced age.
In 1878 he was united in marriage with Missouri V. Edwards by Rev. Alvin Rucker. They bought land in the Salem community, and improved it, where they lived for 33 years. To this union one daughter was born, Daisy, who died at the age of 18 years, on January 18, 1899. In 1888, he organized the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Ste. Genevieve County which he served as secretary for 27 years. In 1898 he was elected Judge of the Ste. Genevieve County Court and was re-elected in 1902.
In 1917 his wife passed away and shortly thereafter he sold his farm and personal effects and in July of that year came to Farmington where he has since resided. On December 4, 1918, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Mary A. McLarney by Presiding Elder H. P. Crowe. She passed away on May 5, 1945.
In 1922, J. H. Orten was elected Presiding Judge of the St. Francois County Court. During his term of office the County Court built the first concrete road in St. Franocis County except the short experimental strip which had been built on Potosi Street in Farmington. During his administration, in response to a petition signed by more than two-thirds of the qualified voters of the county, an election was called to vote on a bond issue of $250,000.00 for a new Court House. The proposition carried by a majority of more than 2 to 1. The contract for the new building was awarded to the McCarthy Brothers Construction Company but had not been completed by the time Judge Orten's term expired.
J. H. Orten was one of twelve children, all the brothers and sisters having preceded him in death. He is survived by six nieces and five nephews: Mrs. Meade Richards, Arcadia, Mo., Fred Craighead, Minden, La., Mrs. Laura Welch, Prescott, Ariz., Mrs. John Murrill and Mrs. Mattie Berkley, Desloge, Mo., Mrs. James McGeorge, Bismarck, Mo., Charles L. Orten of Kansas City, Mo., Claude E. Orten, Colorado Springs, Colo., L. Eugene Orten, Bonne Terre, Mo., J. Lee Orten, University City, Mo., James M. Orten, Grosse Pointe, Farms, Mich., and a number of great nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. He is also survived by two step-sons for whom he had a deep affection: Dr. John McLarney of Brookfield, Mo., and Harry McLarney, of Glendale, Mo.
Funeral services were held at the Memorial Methodist Church in Farmington on Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by his Pastor, Rev. Elbert C. Cole. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery, with Cozean service.
